Did you by chance happen to go up on the roof of the Duomo? I was over there two years ago for a tour on behalf of Gargoyle Books and one of my fond memories of Milan is the amazing view you can get from the rooftop among all the spires. (Though I do have to say that my fear of heights kicked in big time when my wife asked me to take pictures - something about the angles and seeing everything from the tiny view screen while standing on a sloping roof made me want to get down again in a hurry.)
There is also a small restaurant inside the shopping plaza across the street that has a little balcony that looks out onto the upper reaches of the Duomo. It's a lovely spot for lunch and the food was excellent.
