"According to sources privy to convention planners’ discussions, the 2004 GOP conclave at New York’s Madison Square Garden will be unlike any previous quadrennial gathering of either party. In fact, not all of the main events will be held at the Garden, sources involved in planning the Aug. 31-Sept. 2 convention said.

The source, a veteran official of past GOP conventions, said the 50,000 delegates, dignitaries and guests would watch off-site events on giant TV screens. “Now, we’ll go to the deck of the USS Intrepid as the U.S. Marine Corps Band plays the national anthem,” he said, pretending that he was playing the part of the convention chairman.
“Or, and this is a real possibility, we could see President Bush giving his acceptance speech at Ground Zero,” he added. “It’s clearly a venue they’re considering.”"
Uh-huh....
I really, really, really hope that someone with a brain larger than a walnut convinces them that this is a really, really bad idea. They're worried about protesters _now?_
(And I'd say the same about ANY politican that tried to use Ground Zero for such a purpose. I don't even like them speechifying at memorial services. That space is not for you. It will never be for you. It's for us.)

Date: 2004-02-26 06:18 pm (UTC)But of course. 9/11 was the defining moment of his Presidency and the only moment when he was unchallenged in the office. That's why he keeps returning to it over and over.
And besides, haven't you noticed the general fondness for Grand Pictures? The problem being that the iconic image tends to become the ironic image before it can be put on a Vote-for-Me poster. Can't use the pic of the aircraft carrier. Can't use the pic of him giving troops the bird. So he needs a new picture, and what better one than to remind everyone of the moment when he was actually popular?
Please note that none of this is actually a *defense* of the idea, which is massively nauseating.

All I can hope is that NYC puts such a tangle of red tape in their way they decide not to do it. Maybe we should start the letter-writing campaign to Bloomberg now?
I've already informed the Republican spouse that, while I had planned to stay out of the city entirely while the locusts were there, if they do go through with this plan I will be joining the protesters. Republican spouse didn't even give me the usual "Stupid Liberal" look he reserves for such occasions.
