Giving Thanks
Nov. 22nd, 2006 12:40 pmTomorrow, I'm going to head off into the wilds of Massachusetts to do the One Holy Day of Obligation as my family knows it (if you're not dead, you're there, and if you are dead you'd better have the coroner's note to excuse you). So I thought I'd take today as a moment of calm before the familial chaos to say my thanks.
it's not a complete list, but it hits the highlights...
I am thankful that we've been given another year with my parents, and that we have the awareness and the affection to KNOW that it is a gift. And that we're able to tell them that, regularly.
I am thankful for my own health, which is -- neck strain notwithstanding -- better than it has been in years. And now I'm due for bronchitis, I just know it....
I am thankful for my best-beloveds, my family, both by-blood and by-choice. Amy, Sue and Larry. Dan and Evan. Keith and Terri. You guys are solid like granite, and sparkly like gold.
I am thankful for the felines, even when Boomer chews my hair at 5am and Pandora has a hissy fit because Boomer looked at her, and... they'se my kids, gods help me, and I love them. And when they curl up next to me and purr, and knead my sweater, I know they love me too.
I am thankful for the ability to feed, house and clothe myself by the sweat of my imagination -- which means, by very short extension, that I am thankful for those who read my work, like my work, recommend my work, and generally make my publisher happy with me.
I am thankful for my agent, Jenn, who rocks like a rockin' thing, and my editors, Mary-Theresa at Luna, Elana and Susan at Parachute, who keep me on my toes.
I am thankful for my friends, new and old, who have been there for me and have let me be there for them. Friendship is a thing that needs tending, and you've all green thumbs.
And, yes, gonna embarass him now, I am thankful for James, who sees me clearly even when I can't, who demands I be everything I am -- and nothing I'm not. Oggi e domani, e gli anni imprevisto, io l'ami.
And I am thankful for this country, even when I am angry with the direction it's taking -- the beauty of the land, the courage of its people, the determination to keep ALL the parts as well as the whole. We lose our way every now and again, but the Constitution's compass does eventually lead us home.
And I'm thankful for the fact that tomorrow I will be able to stuff myself with turkey and cranberry sauce (with ridges!) and pecan pie, and mashed sweet potato and roasted veggies, and good wine, and laughter and stories and even the obligatory Family Photo. And will be loved, and love in return. And will carry that with me the 364 days until we do it again.
And I wish you all the same.

Re: I thought you'd get a kick out of this
Date: 2006-11-23 05:02 pm (UTC)We used to have wild turkey crossing the lawn every now and then. Impressive beasts, totally without fear. Much, much smarter than their farm-breed cousins, so much so that you can understand why Ben Franklin wanted them as the national symbol rather than the lazy-ass (if gorgeous) bald eagle....
