And so in the news we have one mayor for, and one governor against the legallity of same-sex civil marriages.

Mayor Dailey -- why not? http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-gay19.html

The Governator -- Absolutely not.
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-Gay-Marriage-Calif.html (oooo, what a shock! Apparently it's okay to sexually annoy women if you're a man, but not to join in a committed relationship if your genitalia match)

Do you get the feeling that the country's a wee bit divided on this topic? I don't get what the fuss is all about, myself I mean, if you've got objections, don't marry someone of the same sex! There. All taken care of. Get the hell out of other peoples' lives, now.

And meanwhile, Bush has seated a noted anti (legal)-abortion judge. Apparently stuffing through your preferred people/agendas at term-end was bad when Clinton did it, but okay when Bush does it. *grumble*

And on federal fronts, still the Ashcroft-led insanity continues. And Republicans on the right are freaking out over Bush's planned immigration plan -- http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/21/politics/21IMMI.html?hp

I've heard a number of people talking about leaving the country if Bush wins another term. It's starting to sound like an appealing option. And I don't say that lightly. My heart hurts for what this country has become in four short years -- there are ways to recover from fear and pain. Paranoid and phobic protectionism isn't it. IM(voting)O, anyway.

Heee. I love Daley. Sure, he's in bed with the mob and Chicago's a hotbed of corruption with a budget deficit that would likely go away if some of the corruption would, but he's also fairly pro-environment, very pro-Chicago, and he's open to gay marriages.

And he's not trying to take away our civil liberties. I'm very pro-civil liberty.

I don't know what makes me more sad/angry: that Bush and his cronies have been blithely allowed to drive this country into the dirt, or that so many stupid people still support his efforts to do just that, because it's "patriotic."

As for the gay marriage thing, quite frankly there's no way it can ever withstand constitutional scrutiny, no matter how many federal judges Bush manages to seat. The question is how much anti-gay rhetoric and, worse, violence, will flare before it's settled.

I disagree; the federal judges are the ones who are DOING the constitutional scrutiny. Control the judiciary and you control the Constitution. And Bush knows it.

And even if you argue that they don't--you've heard the quote, "Mr. Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it." Worchester v. Georgia, on the Indian Removal Act.

Bush is intent, as was the President who made the earlier statement, on turning us all into an "interesting, civilized, and Christian community."

Feh.

Hmm. I wonder if Canada is far enough away.

OK, point taken. I'm a natural pessimist...see what happens when I try and look on the bright side?

Must now find way to lock Nader in a cellar.
