I don't remember the name of the book, it was one a Bertram Chandler Grimes novel. It contained a Rift or some such, wherein two Grimes from parallel universes landed on the same planet, with their wives (their lives had diverged and they married different women). Dominic Flandry also showed up, from Poul Anderson's far future history. Flandry went off with Grimes' A's wife, Grimes A consoled himself with Grimes' B's wife, and Grimes B was stuck all by his lonesome self. That only other book I can recall with that sort of thing happened, was Ubik, sort of.

Poul Anderson thought about retaliating with putting Grimes into a Nicholas van Rijn story, but I suppose that after Chandler's death he put the idea aside.
