well. fuck.

Gone from us, only a few days after he finally came home.

Had he died in the hospital I can't say anyone would have been surprised -- when he went in, two+ years ago, none of us expected him to ever come home again.

The fact that he did, only to die so soon after --

well, that's Charlie for ya. Never would do the expected damn thing, not even if he had to go out of his way to fuck with you.

Stubborn, misanthropic, cantankerous, wonderful old bastard.

My sympathies to his wife K, and the rest of the family.

I'm very sorry to hear it. I was so happy to hear he was home the other day. You're right, this comes as far more of a shock.

Oh, man. Not entirely unexpected, but still entirely shitty. RIP, Charlie. :(

Too damn many absent friends

In tracking down more details about this, I ran into an obituary for Sara Wescoat Purdom, the wife of SF writer Tom Purdom. I used to be a more-or-less neighbor of Tom and Sara in Philadelphia, and a regular attendee of their First Tuesday monthly open houses. Sara was a wise and gracious woman, and a charming hostess. She tended to be quiet, but what she did say was always worth hearing. I can only imagine Tom and thier son Christopher's feelings.

At least, like Charlie, Sara passed at home, surrounded by her family.

Charlie, Sara... Condolences to all concerned. The world is a poorer place without them.

Charlie Grant? Charlie 'I showed up for his birthday/100th-book party' Grant?

:(

I hadn't had any news about him for... well... ever. I didn't expect to see a rose for someone I'd met, y'know? At least, not any time soon.

Friended you, of course. I didn't realise you were over here (silly me).

I came home from DC to the messages about Sara Purdom, and now Charlie Grant. I've been out of the loop for a while, but I remember...well, just, damn.

At least, he managed to make it home.

I remember: the last time I saw him was at your July 4 party, and he couldn't even make it onto the deck. It was a major achievement that he was able to be there at all.

Damn, damn, damn. Much too soon, after a valiant battle.
