I'm not going to rant on the subject. Everyone has their own definition of 'objectionable' and everyone has the right to determine that for their children. However, she said through gritted teeth....

Some of you may have heard about the recent hoo-ha with the SF magazine Asimov's and the school fundraiser.

If not, here's a link: http://woodtv.triton.net/video/realbox.php?ontv=Target8_Magazine_Fundraiser&cat=news

Update: the non-RealPlayer requiring news story link: http://woodtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=1645394&nav=0RclKpQF and the Asimov's discussion board

If you feel the urge to speak out in support of Asimov's (and any other magazine that refuses to curb the legitimate expression of intellectual and creative ideas and is therefore at risk of being penalized), you migh want to drop a note to QSP, Inc, which is a division of Reader's Digest, and the company which was running that and many other fundraisers around the country.

Can't get the site to load. Is it covered somewhere else? Couldn't find anything in a cursory Google search, though I don't think I had all the right things to search on. What's the scoop?

Ah. I was going to post about it this morning (read it in some blog but I left the reference at home), but I couldn't find anything about it on the WOOD-TV website (I didn't think to look under "Education."). Thanks for the link.

Wasn't Reader's Digest, once upon a time, an adult publication that did slimmed-down versions of all the useful news of the day? I ask because after having read it for a year on a cheapo subscription, I've taken to calling it the Fundie Digest. Which means that they won't *care* how many commie pinko liberals will get upset as long as their traditional two-parent, white picket fence conservative clients are happy.

Exactly. Readers Digest is a very conservative publication, they'll see any protests as crazy rantings from evil liberals, which will make them feel even more justified.

Just goes to show that people still seem to think science fiction is for kiddies, and should be treated as such. *sigh*

At least the investigation is only trying to get the magazine pulled off of school catalogs, and not pushing further to burn all the issues of Asimov's it can find for publishing smut. That makes me happy.
