News comes to me that Dan Lundy has died. There're maybe three five people out in LJ land who know who Dan was. And that's a shame, because he was one of the best in-house advocates an author ever had. The director of academic and library marketing/sales at Penguin, unlike many sales guys, Dan read, and loved reading, and loved authors, even when they were making him nuts. He listened to what editors had to say, and took our recommendations seriously, and I know for a fact that we would not have done as well at Ace/Roc without his support.

Gone from us at age 51, from complications from lung cancer.

Damn it.

UPDATE:  Donations can be made in his name to Pinelands Preservation Alliance, 17 Pemberton Road, Southampton, NJ 08088, 609-859-8860.

Ugh. So sorry to hear that. I didn't "know" him, but I'm pretty sure I've seen his name around the Internet.

You make me wish I'd known him.

oh my gosh! I hadn't thought about Dan in years but knew him pretty well back in my original publishing days. What a great guy he was and your description was so right on target.

Only 51. So sad.

Sh*t! I knew Dan for a long time at Penguin. We played softball together for I-don't-know-how-many-years, but I hadn't seen him in a long time. Damn it! He really was one of the good guys.

Saw your post on sff.net & came over here to see this one as well. I was Dan's assistant in academic marketing (& then remained to work under him as a copywriter for a while) back around 1998. I'd lost touch w/the whole gang over there in the past few years, but heard about his passing from another ex-coworker here on LJ.

Thanks for posting this. He was definitely too young.

By backtracking through littlebutfierce's thread on Dan, I found two more besides her, you and me. Unfortunately, as often happens on LJ, I can't actually determine their real identities, though dates of employment do overlap ours.
