From the NYT:

"Kenneth L. Lay and Jeffrey K. Skilling, the chief executives who guided Enron through its spectacular rise and even more stunning fall, were found guilty today of fraud and conspiracy, which each carry a sentence of 5 to 10 years in prison."

Specifically, Lay was convicted of all six counts against him, including conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud. Skilling just got conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud.

I don't think they should be sent to prison. I think they should be stripped of all their posessions (assuming they have any left), and set to work in a Mickey Dee's for minimum wage.

And Lay's wife, who is an entire piece of work from what I remember, should be working right there alongside him.

Isn't Lay's wife the one who held a highly-publicized 'tag sale' a few years ago? I forget what the excuse for it was, though.

yup, that was her. her excuse of the time was that they had no incoming revenue and were down to - *gasp* - two homes. "The only reason they didn't lose those," she sobbed dramatically, "was that the Texas homesteader laws prevent those from being taken." Oh the humanity.

At that point, legal advisors put the kibash on the current Mrs. Lay making any more public statements.

Who says they can't do both? I think it's only fair Big Bubba get a chance to do to Lay what he did to all Enron's shareholders....

This verdict pleases me.

yes, he didn't get convicted of ALL the charges - just 19 our of 28 - but he got convicted of enough to total a potential sentencing of 180-90 years. So I can live with 19 out of 28 :-)

I'd bet they aren't the owners of much of anything. Their assets are probably so buried there isn't anything to seize. Still, 30-60 years behind bars (probably in a Club Fed, and less time for good behavior) is a fairly stiff sentence for such as these.

Sounds fair to me -- especially if he has to work there until he can't stand it and is ready for jail. If he can stomach 20 years flipping burgers, it works.

Unfortunately, we're a republic, not a democracy, so we'll have to trust the jury to do the best they can.

Maybe they can be stripped of their possessions and sent to prison to manufacture items for McDonald's?

Wait, that's the new Pete Hautman book...
