Kvell (rhymes with swell) v : To express pleasure in a gentle manner. To exclaim joyfully or proudly, especially in boasting about the achievements of a family member. What you do at your child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Or, in my case, at my mom's fabulous news.

You must understand, my mom has more talent in her left hand than I do in my entire body. She's good. But after a strong start in the 70's (publication in the Massachussetts Review among others, and a lot of attention from magazine editors of the time) she put it aside for thirty years to help raise, feed, school and send off three kids. Now, after retirement, she's back to writing short fiction. Literary short fiction, the stuff that scares the bejasus out of me.

A few days ago she got word that her story "Mind the Gap" has received the K. Margaret Grossman Fiction Award (via the magazine Literal Latte). Details haven't quite come coherent yet, but it will include publication, a cash award of not insignificant value, and possibly a reading this summer in Manhattan

Go her! *throws confetti and sparklies*

To quote her own words -- "Who says you can't restart a career at 70?"
