lagilman: Does Not Play Well With Stupid People (stupid people)

Okay, who rerouted the logic train, and how do we issue people new tickets?

Good news for the man who converted from Islam to Christianity and was facing the death penalty because of it (a far more complicated case than was originally reported, apparently) -- they're dropped the suit for "a lack of information and a lot of legal gaps in the case."

But what I found particularly...endearing was the following excerpt from the AP article:

"Some Islamic clerics had called for him to be put to death, saying Rahman would face danger from his countrymen if he were released."

Um.... you sure these guys aren't originally from Texas?

Now, now, now, Islamic retribution is active and personal: Do X or we'll kill you. Texan retribution is passive and impersonal: Do X or we'll flood your place with anonymous hate mail and then when someone who *cough* isn't affiliated with us (or at least you can't prove it) hurts you, we'll decry the violence... but also say that treating you offends our religion, so you just end up dying. But it's not our FAULT!

it is? In my experience, nothing in Texas is passive. Much less impersonal.

As someone who grew up in Texas, all I can is...good point. Although it's been awhile since any news story from Texas appalled me quite as much as this one has. I hope the happy ending gets to last for this guy.

Unrelated, since I remember that you enjoyed such things back on The Codex, I wanted to let you know that I have some science porn (http://researchgrrrl.livejournal.com/tag/archaeometry) archived as reference materials for writers and other geeks now. It's mostly aspects of science and history as relating to archaeological research at this point but even that is starting to expand as I get cool questions.

Just click on the Neep tag for the full set of geek-friendly links if you ever need a low-key distraction you can justify as research. *g* (Oh, and there's a bit of food porn in there, too, though nowhere near so much.) Cheers!

As someone who practiced Islam for 7 years... I've been searching for that particular passage in the suras which states that you must kill the Christians and convertees---that passage that must've inspired the shari'a. Damn. Can't find it?!

The quote I loved was the guy who claimed that by converting to Christianity, the convertee had "humiliated God." S'cuse me? Mere human beings can humiliate God? Guess he's not as Almighty as advertised, then.

But, you know, a nicer death.

Darth Cheney [term from AirAmerica] while head of Halliburton, a Texas company, was doing business with Iraq, Iran, and Libya when all three countries were on a list of countries US companies were banned fromr doing business with directly, via a fake independent subsidiary (it was a mail drop on an island offshore of the USA, which had no staff in it, it was basically a stovepipe between the interdicted countries listed above, and Halliburton offices in Texas.

While Cheney wasn't originally from Texas, he was essentially transplanted from from Wyoming via DC....
