why is it, she asked not entirely rhetorically, that some folk think that just because the tiger hasn't bitten them yet, they're somehow immune to tiger bites?

Sometimes the big kitty is a big kitty. Sometimes it's a peevy carnivore with sharp teeth and claws.

In a previous life I was a safety captain at work. Part of my job was to help my co-workers be safe on the job. One of the lessons we tried to teach was: "Just because you've done it a million times without an incident, doesn't make it safe." But I like your metaphor, it's fun. :)
