  1. cats:
fascinating creatures. Reportedly aloof, obnoxious, self-interested...yet also loving, affectionate, sympathetic and capable of making a bad day better just by purring. The only time I didn't have a cat in my life it was simply because I was under parental orders to wait for the right one to come along (and she did).
  2. cooking:
    I. Love. Food. Reading about it, preparing it, watching others prepare it, eating it and feeding others with it. Eating merely to sustain the body always seemed to be missing the important parts. Food is social activity. Sharing food is the most social, most giving thing we as primates do. Food is, in effect, love. I don't cook for people I don't like.
  3. food:
    see above.
  4. genre fiction:
Do I get to say "duh?" It's what I read as a kid. it's what I write, now. it takes us out of the thing that is "normal" and gives us wings to be Elsewhere. Any genre, any at all. It's all fantasy. it's just not all, lord knows, good. But then, I can and do say the same thing about litfic...
  5. haiku:
    what is there to say?

    summer days too long and hot;

    haiku keeps me cool.
  6. luna books:
The editor-in-chief picked my brain when she was starting this imprint, then picked my "Retrievers" series to be in her starting line-up. I have a long-term interest in this baby, above and beyond my natural desire to see any genre imprint grow and thrive.
Besides, they're doing so many things right, I keep hoping they'll be a shining example to others. Hey, a girl can dream, right?
  7. photography:
The antithesis, in so many ways, of writing, but the underlying desire and craft are the same: you have to know what to keep wthin the viewfinder, nd what to cut away. One chance to get across the experience you want the reader/viewer to feel, knowing that they will bring their own experiences to play as well. Light and shadows, surface and depth, and always, always, texture. Ansel Adams was a god. So was Henri Cartier-Bresson.
  8. politics:
Keeping an eye on our elected officials is a basic right and requirement of being a halfway decent citizen. Or so I was raised to believe. Then again, I also live in a state whose unofficial motto is "no matter who goes to Trenton, we all get fucked." Cynical? moi?
  9. single malt:
My drink of choice at conventions and sales conferences. Not only do I like it (unsweet but somewhat smokily sentimental, with a nice kicker at the end), but I can a) nurse one sifter for an hour or b) go on a tear and not end up with a hangover or a case of ohdearIdidwhat?
I don't get drunk on single malts. It's a lovely thing.
  10. travel:
It's not so much wanderlust as wanderwonder. Every place I've ever visited is still held within me. It may only be a scent, a flash of color, the faint memory of a meal, or it might be an entire, in-detail day. But there's nowhere that's left me unchanged.

Home is where the cats live, where you go to when the what's-over-yonder itch has been scratched for the day, put your feet up and ponder what you've seen.
