neadods, the tacky but timely meme:
You're home. The roads are clear and the public transport is running, when the order comes: "You have 4 hours to get out of town."
How do you get out?
Where do you go?
Do you take anyone with you?
What do you take? (put an asterix on the stuff that you'd still take if you only had 30 minutes)
If your house is gone, would you come back to the area?
1. How do you get out? Load up the car and hit the road, jack.
2. Depends on where the storm is coming in from. If Boston was going to be safe, I'd head for family up there. If not, I'd go as far inland as was recommended, and then drive an hour further.
3. If my folks couldn't get mass transit out of the city, I'd take them (otherwise, they'd get out faster using the train or the infamous Chinatown Bus). I'd then see if anyone on my quick-dial needed a shotgun seat out of town.
4.
* the felines
* all cash and credit cards and cash-transferrables
* my financial records (aka 'the fireproof safe-file')
* my passport
* my mobile phone
* my travel kit, which tends to be ready-packed anyway
* as much of the medicine cabinet as I could sweep into a grocery bag
* my jewelery
* my PDA
* my old teddy bears (we all need teddy bears in times of stress, and mine are articularly velveteen)
* the laptop and backup files/cords/battery
* bottled water
any fresh fruit or otherwise portable and ready-to-eat foods as I had on-hand
as many pairs of jeans, shirts and underwear as I could cram into a suitcase
my case of negatives (easier to make new photos than try to sort what needs to be saved)
the photos by the side of my bed (those, I need with me)
my daggers and sword, JiC things get really bad.
pillows and blankets
extra soap
rolls of toilet paper
my fetish collection
notebooks and pens
candles and lighters
Most of this stuff amusingly enough, is already set up in such a way that I could make a clean sweep to load the car. And yes, I was both a girl scout and a tent-style camper as a kid why do you ask?
5. Eventually, maybe. But not definitely. I can live/make a living anywhere.
Not going to tag anyone, but I do think this is something we should all put our thoughts in order on before it's needed, so hey give it a shot. Ad I'll add a rider to the original -- get your answers down within fifteen minutes of reading this. No thinking -- do it! The clock will be ticking.

Date: 2005-09-10 01:46 am (UTC)Depends on the disaster area.
I'd take my cat, and call my friends to be sure they have a way out.
* the felines
* all cash and credit cards and cash-transferrables
* my financial records (aka 'the fireproof safe-file')
* my prescriptions
* laptop
* bottled water
* portable dry food
* writing files
art portfolio, which is always packed anyway
*all my clean underwear
* clean clothes
* my best coat
* Tarot decks
pillows and blankets
extra soap and shampoo
rolls of toilet paper
notebooks and pens
candles and lighters
small beading kit, to have something to do with my hands
a few comfort books
whatever text books I could grab, for something to do later
Possibly. I rent, so not if someplace else would be better fiscally.
Done in ten minutes. Hmm.

Date: 2005-09-10 02:37 am (UTC)What's the natural disaster? Storms are pretty much blocked by the mountains. Fire is more likely. There are only three directions to go, and if it's fire, you can't go four hours without being in another fire zone. Hmmmmm. Interesting problem, this. Eventually circle around to Virginia, probably.
There's no one else here who isn't already in better shape to take care of themselves than I am to take care of them. I'd try to hook up with my trainer, because she has the horse trailer.
The animals. Financial stuff. Pictures of my mother. The laptop. Dog and cat food. Some clothes. Water. Some food. Tack. Half a dozen books. Maybe a couple of the fetishes. (Thanks for the reminder.)
Come back? Not a chance.

Date: 2005-09-10 03:57 am (UTC)Evacuating is something that becomes a fine art after a while. I could be packed and on the road in half an hour if I needed to. The essentials:
*Feline travel kit (ready to go)
*Go-bag (backpack w/ survival gear, always ready)
*ID, cash, credit card
*Important papers in plastic case left over from last year's hurricane season
*Whatever sensible clothes I can cram in a suitcase
*Mini-photo album
*Meds
*Laptop
*Spare pair of glasses
*Bottled water, canned goods & can opener
*Jeffie (stuffed dog)
*Cigarettes
*Pillows & bedding
That's the bare essentials. I should note that the go-bag contains things like waterproof matches, lighters, candles, flashlight, batteries & power bars, along with pens & pencils, a change of clothes, first-aid kit, toothbrush & toiletries, &c. I also have a small maglight and medkit that lives in my purse at all times.
Now, since I have evacuated a number of times, and usually with enough warning to grab non-essentials, the following items would probably be included:
CD walkman and CD book
A few books
Whatever I happen to be sewing
Sketchbook and blank notebook
Family-friendly movies, esp. Disney stuff (I have baby nephews & cousins & we tend to evac as a clan)
My mini-altar (small goddess figurine, lavender wand, candle & holder)
Jewelry
Certain family photos
And that's about it, really. How I leave depends on if I'm driving myself or hitching a ride with a friend/relative.

Date: 2005-09-10 05:18 am (UTC)I wish my answer could be different. I'd have to pack up wife and dogs into car and send her to mothers house to evacuate. Meanwhile I'd have to report to base to help in efforts there. Meh.Meh...meh.

Date: 2005-09-10 06:00 pm (UTC)1. By car. Possibly by custom star coach, depending on whether Dale is home. In which case, probably some books would come with me, too, and a great deal of food and water. Maybe even more people, though I'm not sure who.
2. Louisville, to my sister's house.
3. Immediate family, cats and dog.
4. Laptop, archive computer CPU, important papers file (birth certificates, etc.), purse (contains passport, DL, checkbook, PDA, cell phone, swiss army knife, cards, and I have my bank account number memorized), large suitcase of clothing which includes prepacked toiletries, TP (mountain money), water, blankets (already in the car), tools (goes with Dale), eyeglasses, canned food, and if there's room photo albums. I could probably make it out in half an hour with this stuff, though the water might take a little longer to obtain since I don't keep it on hand. Also if there's room, I might throw in the carrying case full of CDs. Alas for the vinyl, though.
5. Excellent question. I think I'd try not to.
