I'm too angry. Too. fucking. angry.

Why are we not standing in front of the White House, demanding an accounting from the President who has shown us, by his apathy and ignorance and shameful lack of compassion, exactly what he thinks of his fellow citizens? Why are we not calling our President, demanding a reason for his abject, public stupidity and denial? Why are we not sending postcards, asking why the President strummed his guitar while his fellow citizens -- HIS FELLOW HUMANS --died?

Compassionate Conservative my ASS.

It's our responsibility to do more than merely bear witness.

Bring it, people. Don't just effing blog about it. BRING IT.

I thought this comment on Making Light (http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/006686.html#92250) was a good response to someone who asked what it was we expected a President to do besides "make sombre statements and visit to survey the damage".

And per your suggestion, I will now go pass the word on to Mr. Bush.

This is one of those times when I truly curse my shitty health. I'm a Floridian who has been through several hurricanes over the course of my life. I'm also part Louisianan, by way of my mother's family. I want to DO something more than write angry letters and send what little money I can spare to disaster relief agencies, and I can't. I just don't have the physical endurance to be an emergency relief volunteer, no matter how much I might want to.

And dammit, I want a president who does more than just mouth empty platitudes and attempts to pass the buck. What really irks me is that he probably really didn't have a clue this could happen; he is, after all, a man who wears gross ignorance as a badge of pride.

These are my people, and they are dying. Someone needs to be held accountable.

If I could, I'd be in front of the White House holding a sign saying "How Could You Not Know, George?"

If I could, I would be right there with you.

This whole thing makes me so. fucking. angry.

And yeah, I'll let the bastard know what I think. You betcha. It's the least I can do.

I know this thought is unworthy, but I find myself wondering if this "carelessness" and delay, first in evacuating the less financially well off and second in providing transportation, food, and water, is a deliberate action to eliminate the "worthless, excess" population of the Gulf Coast. I am so infuriated, I could . . . maybe I ought not say.

I am tired of hearing about the "tremendous array of forces" who seem to be doing nothing to the point. Other than consuming food and water that the people on the streets and in the hospitals do not have.

What happened to "I may disagree with you but I will defend your right" etc.?

Seriously, do you think angered phone calls are going to be received any better than a crank call? Why not use reasoned arguments instead of a call for anger?

I'm a guy from the other side of the political aisle who disagrees with you, but still respects you as well as your ideals. It's sad that I have to post anonymously because of my connections, especially since we writers are supposed to be so open minded, but that door only swings to the left in this community these days.

"This has to do with RESPONSIBILITY."

Amen. But this administration has never given any indication of knowing the meaning of the word--and therefore, of not comprehending the most essential quality in a leader.

Grrr.

What you call hate I call justified anger.

First, I didn't think what she said had anything to do with politics. When a president fails, it doesn't matter what side you're own. You can't give out natural disaster mulligans just because you share the same ideaology. Second, I assume she's talking about "reasoned anger." Besides, they don't read that stuff. They just absorb the general impact of getting thousands of negative responses. Third, I've encountered several sci-fi writers who are quite conservative. And there are many such among fandom.

I didn't vote for Bush but in immediate months after 9/11 I was impressed with the amount of compassion and leadership he demonstrated. With this, however, he has made a number of insensitive remarks. He has also stated that all looting is illegal, which is not true. Looting necessities during a disaster is, in fact, legal. And he claims that no one could see the possibility of this disaster happening. That's either ignorance or incompetence because it was in the news all last week. It was in Newsweek six weeks ago. And his administration cut funding to the city of New Orleans for levee improvement and disaster studies.

I'm already tired of watching video footage of babies die, of elderly women and men slumped in lawn chairs, dead and forgotten, abandoned by their government when they needed help the most. If you want to make it political, fine. I can do that. I live in a state where nearly 67% voted for Bush. Some people here were hurt by Katrina, so we take this stuff very seriously. After all, we're vulnerable to future strikes. Walk around the mall here and listen to what people are saying. He's already lost moderates and bewildered some of his supporters. This lack of leadership is upsetting a lot of people. We see one president who is more than willing to do whatever he can on behalf of WTC victims (majority white, upper class) and another president who doesn't give a damn about poor people, both white and black but especially the latter.

I saw a man yesterday shake his head and say, "God, I wish I could've voted for someone else. Anyone else." In a state where people who didn't vote Bush are often afraid to talk about it in public, that's saying a lot.

And what if this had been a terrorist attack? Where is all that post 9/11 disaster planning? Where did all those billions of dollars go? Why weren't we adequately prepared for disaster relief before the monster CAT 5 hit?

I don't hate anybody but I am angry. I feel it's my duty as a citizen in a democracy to let the government know what I'm thinking. I've written letters of support and I've written letters of disagreement to this and earlier administrations. It's okay to speak up in America.

Yes, what did? Why don't you defend [livejournal.com profile] suricattus's right to tell our ELECTED LEADER what she thinks of his leadership over the past few days? Oh, wait, we're not supposed to question our government anymore, my mistake. And why are you assuming her phone calls will not be filled with reason as well as anger? The two are not mutually exclusive.

It's sad that I have to post anonymously

Yes, it is sad that you don't have the balls to post under your real name/user name. You would have gotten much more measured and respectful responses to your comment if you hadn't done a troll fly-by.

Sure, suricattus has the right to say whtever she thinks. That doesn't mean that I have to either agree with it or be quiet myself.

Freedom of speech goes both ways, remember?

"Balls", yeah right. This isn't an eighth grade school fight.

BTW, it was not my intention to be either a troll or a fly-by. I merely posted an opinion counter to the majority here. I would think that if anyone in this country would be tolerant of opposing minority viewpoints, it would be those here. But I know better.

For want of identifying myself, I may be a lurker. I may be someone who already posts here but know that if I say what I think that it will hurt my job.

What, like it's not possible to disagree with the majority in a reasoned, rational manner? Pfft. Personally, I would take points off this troll for excess melodrama, vague intimations of political connections, and overused insults, especially the old "meanie evil liberals" one. I mean, really, if you're going to flame, could you at least do it with style?

I defend the first amendment. I don't stand behind anonymous tags because I'm afraid of voicing an opinion. I practice the first amendment, right here, right now. I have this cool tool called tact. I'm goind to share the secret of using tact with the first amendment Mr. "Anonymous cause of my connections": I get to tell people to go to hell and have them thank me for it. I don't do it anonymously. I do it face to face.
Now I, I can get in trouble for speaking out against the president or my superiors. I also fall under auspices of the UCMJ. But I don't get that hint of military from your posts...so drop the guise and be a man. Afterall, other men and women are dieing for your right to speak freely and unafraid.

Nodding like a bobblehead over here.

The anonymous posting? Typical passive-aggressive bullshit. You get to do a driveby sliming and claim politics as a shield and a privilege.

PuhLEEZE. You're scared to sign your name.

I've called the Shrubwit's Whitehouse so many times to bitch at them, I'm bound to be on a few little lists somewhere. Hell, the people in Diane Feinstein's DC office know my voice and cringed when they hear it, because they know that, if I'm calling, it's because I'm planning on kicking her Vichy Democrat ass.

Aint about politics, yo. That's some dam' fine passive-aggressive, right there.

But the caveat? They have to sign their name; I don't play ball with people in masks.

Well said, Suricattus! Very well said.

And as far as the earlier anonymous poster's comments go, I'd just like to ask where, exactly he saw a call for unreasoned anger and hate in the post that started all this off?

I saw anger, yes, but I also saw a call for a President to be held to account for failing his people in an almost criminal manner, in so many ways. I also saw a request that he justify his policies and actions.

It *is* possible to be angry and still manage to present your argument in a clear and concise manner, you know, and to demand someone be held to account without resorting to partisan argument.

Left and right are just labels and excuses for the ways we act. Political affiliation shouldn't matter in the slightest at times like this . . .

And yet, these days, it seems everything, no matter how important, is political, everything is a matter of point scoring, party loyalty is of rising importance, and political perception trumps reality.

Well, bollocks to that! Political affiliation doesn't matter, all that matters is there are people on the ground whose lives have been shattered and who have the right to demand leaders whose primary loyalty isn't to their Party (whatever their affiliation may be) or themselves, but rather to the interests of their constituents.

Yes, Canada's DART team (they are a disaster response team that, in particular, has mobile apparatus to purify, package, and distribute hundreds of thousands of gallons of water a day in disaster areas) was mobilized and stuck on a plane on Monday. Homeland Security denied them permission to land in the US. They've been waiting for permission ever since.

Meanwhile, infants and the elderly are dying of dehydration, and only Harry Connick, Jr. is driving into LA to take them water, because FEMA "only today found out that the convention center had survivors in it", and it's their own fault if 15-20,000 people follow the mayor's repeated public instructions to go there go to an unauthorized site no one knows about.
