lagilman: coffee or die (truth to power)
I keep hearing people say, over and over again, that the right to free speech trumps responsibility for what we say. Even or perhaps especially if words are our tools-of-trade. I wonder how they can look themselves in the mirror - or look at their children -- after that.

You choose to exercise the right of free speech. That does not mean you're responsible for what people do with it...but you ARE responsible for influencing them. I mean, isn't that the basic idea of thanking a teacher?

Sharon is once again Writing It So I Don't Have To (I should send her cookies, or something).

The Hugo Awards, a discursion

She is talking specifically about her own books (and if you haven't bought Carousel Tides yet, damn it, why not?) but her points hold true for, y'know, my own work, too. If you liked HARD MAGIC or WEIGHT OF STONE, there is no reason (if you went to Aussiecon or are going to Reno) you can't nominate it for a Hugo.

I have no expectation of ever winning such a thing. But getting on the prelim ballot would keep me warm on those long cold nights of self-doubt and career-fear....
