CSI Love and general disgust
Jan. 12th, 2005 11:02 pmHee! CSI: NY is just too damn much fun. The politics of dog shows! Justifiable homicide of bike messengers! Burst pipes! Dirty water dogs! So totally New York. It's still not grabbing me the way the original does, but it's not because of the plots. I find myself gravitating more to Stella than Mac, which I would not have thought, to begin with, although he does have his own charm. Maybe he just suffers from Lack-of-Grissom?
Less fun is the news that Prince Harry has been forced to apologize. Why? because he thought it would be a good idea to wear a Nazi officer's costume to a party. I hope the Queen decides he's not too old to be taken over her knee and paddled. Hard.
And apparently the White House is now offically saying "whoops, nope, no WMD in Iraq. Sorry! Just kidding!" Speaking of people needing to be spanked... (and not in the fun-if-you're-kinked-that-way, either).
Oh, and in case I haven't said it recently? Boomerang is insane. Totally, absolutely, freaking insane. He needs kitty valium. Oi.

Actually, I finally put my finger on it. It's not so much that they're not clones of Grissom, it's that the spinoffs have absolutely NONE of the wicked humor that levens the original. They're Grim and Grimmer, and ew. I think that the reason why people gravitate to the original, and Gris in particular is because he brings balance to a gritty, dirty, vile job with "memento mori" written all over it by adding voracious curiosity, nonjudgement (and occasionally lack of judgement), and a certain dry wit.
You'd never hear the Miami or NY groups just hanging out in the break room blowing the breeze (or complaining that oblivious bossman has once again forgotten the difference between samples and lunch.) I have yet to see spinoff people concocting facitious-but-scientific experiments like Ballistic Boy this week, much less fooling around with it later. And there's no dialog like: "I need your eyes" "Only if they stay in my head" or "Tell me something I don't know" "I quit karate because a boy smaller than me made me cry."
THAT is why the spinoffs don't work. NY, now that it's lightening up and giving actual charater to the characters, might survive. But it's certainly why Horatio My-own-Hornblower is never going to be a serious challenge to The Gris.

Date: 2005-01-13 01:44 pm (UTC)Stella has a very dry sense of humor and affectionate patience that appeals. Their ME amuses the hell out of me. And Mac's starting to really shine -- I loved the way he played with the dog handlers, using their own patterns to unnerve them while he was looking for the pooch-of-witnessing, and then going on to freely display that he's as much a show-geek as anyone. So yeah, there's hope for NYC.
Miami started off with a sense of humor from the rest of the cast, but Horatio just weighted it down until I couldn't stand it any more.

Date: 2005-01-13 03:03 pm (UTC)Haven't seen last night's NYC yet (taped; was watching a hilarious version of Candide on Great Performances, highly recommended) but I hear that the word has gone out that they're trying to loosen them up just a little bit. And that will make all the difference.

Date: 2005-01-14 02:27 am (UTC)True. But there's quiet insanity, and then there's "wheee! bounce off the wall, over the sofa, under the table, bite mom on the nose" insanity.
