for those who don't check the updates regularly.

Having been through one community sell-off that was a disaster, this one doesn't sound all that bad to me. Here's hoping that's not some of those famous last words...

One likes to think that any community sell-off would have to be handled better than that one was.

I'm heartened by any group whose announcement includes, "Don't worry --- I thoroughly screened them to make sure they weren't evil."

Of course, evil can be sneaky. I'm sure the kings offered the nine rings screened them carefully, too. But it does make me hopeful. :-)

Yahoo wasn't evil all at once. They were evil about 6 months later when they woke up one morning and said "how can we turn this into a cash cow?"

But the Onelist->(Damn, what were they after onelist and before Yahoo? Egroups?) sell-off wasn't that bad at all.

Thanks for posting this. A number of my friends have been posting doom and gloom predictions for the future of lj, so it's nice to see another perspective. Especially from someone who has been through one of these sell-offs before and knows all the ways NOT to do it.

I'm still mourning over GEnie. Things haven't been the same since they shut us down. ::sniff::

I miss GEnie. Sounds, however, as if there are reasonable synergies here and there will be new functionalities, restoration of old ones, and no promiscuous changes -- even an ongoing role for volunteers.
