I've popped this onto my wishlist, but I'll have to wait a while, as it looks as though even the Kindle edition is going to be hugely expensive in the UK.

Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about that - it's all about local standards and taxation. :-(

I didn't mean to sound as though I was complaining to you - sorry. I think it has a lot to do with what gets published here as opposed to in the US. I was in a specialist SF&F 2nd hand and new bookshop in Scotland a few weeks ago where I noticed there were a lot of new books by authors I didn't know, and American publishers. The proprietor said that there are loads of books that hit the US market that never see the light of day here - he deals with an American wholesaler to get his stock.

So I think what's happening with Amazon UK is that firstly the hardback will be expensive because hardback, it'll have to be specially printed and bound, and, well because they can. There is no sales tax on physical books in the UK. There IS sales tax on e-books, but I think they're keeping that format expensive again, because they can. I wonder how much you will see of the £11.99 ($18.46) they're going to charge for the Kindle edition. Not as much as you should, is my guess.

The author never sees a large enough percentage unless they self-publish, and that has its own agita/issues. :-)

And yeah, the "ebooks are software and should be taxed thus, not as entertainment" pisses me the hell off. Between that and VATMOSS, it's almost as tough the governments don't want us expanding our minds....
