Nimoy is almost certainly who first taught me anything related to Judaism, with his story about peeking in synagogue and seeing the two-handed gesture that later inspired the Vulcan salute. I know I'm plenty ignorant about the faith and its history, but he got me going in the right direction TO learn (which friends have helped me with since then). Another positive impact.
Original Trek was my way in to sf: the cast are all icons to me. Spock was never my favourite -- I found him rather intimidating -- but he made the show and Nimoy made him. I shall miss him, as I miss DeForest Kelley and James Doohan.
I've always been more of a McCoy fan, but Spock was a great character and Nimoy played the role of a lifetime - it's always sad to see that another pop-culture constant is gone...
