(for the record, they don't actually MAKE soup bowls in this pattern, far as I can tell. Why? I dunno. Seems stupid, but there ya go.)

Soup bowls should hold soup, in sufficient quantity.

Surely this depends on the type of company you expect. Given that the company will be in the Wild Wild West for the foreseeable future, I'd go with shared colour but distinct appearance. For bonus points, is there an option to emphasize the deliberateness of the pairing by doing the same with the tea cups and/or dessert plates?

(That last part may be going overboard; really depends on the actual options you can find)

Then I'm going to get all behind the "thematically similar, not identical" movement of dining aesthetics.

Well, my preference would be for similar texture offset by variations in colour, but I'm a fan of textures in general. And since I'm not being invited over for dinner any time soon (though, y'know, feel free to prove me wrong :), I'd say that the choice of one or the other depends entirely on your personal preference.

I will point out that you'll be faced with the china much more frequently than your guests. And while it's nice to make a good impression in all matters, the people who are going to say after a visit, "oh she's a wonderful person, but oh dear heavens, those plates!..." How often do you want to have them over, anyway?

I'm a purist about these things. But then, I'm a purist living in a region of pinko liberal hippies who dig the whole mismatched dinnerware thing (which I do for informal occasions--yay Goodwill!) so you can't go by me. :-)

Hold soup, not make it taste funny, not allow the soup to cool too quickly (unless is it is a cold soup), not make eating the soup awkward. Any of the other choices are also acceptable, depending on the preferences of the person setting the table/hosting the soup-eating event. If someone is feeding me soup, I'm probably not going to be complaining about the table setting. :)

Perfect soup bowls may never match the china, but are just the only thing to hold soup with great care and make it taste so much better.

Eclectic funk!

Other category - I focus more on type of soup than appearance. I like a nice stoneware dark bowl for a stoup, chili or soup, but for a broth I prefer a white china-style.

Canned soup gets whatever is on the shelf, of course, on the rare rare times I use it.

Got mine at a restaurant supply for about $2 each. Doesn't help the space problem tho.

Soup bowls and by extension cereal bowls, should be whatever the user deems worthy to be used as soup or cereal bowls, regardless of make, style, or color.}:P

Why yes, I have a very eclectic collection of plates and bowls, why do you ask? }:P

I think it depends on how bohemian you are, aesthetic-wise. My decorating is bohemian enough that I could get away with almost anything, but other people seem to stick to a color scheme or a material.
