Was too tired to say it last night, but CSI just totally rocked, didn't it? Even as I was caught up in the story (handled really well, with none of the obvious jokes they could have made and a lesser show would have) I was admiring the way all the pieces were worked in together, from the fact that they showed more of the women on the team in the 'doing their thing' bit, to the musical choices (and I'm not one to normally make specific note of background tracks), to the sensitivity of the actor playing Mimosa, the victim's best friend.

Even the rather incredible graphic detail of the second crime scene was perfectly done, driving the viewer over whatever lingering distaste one might have had for the victim into nothing but pity.

And -- hee ! -- Gil comes through again with "oysters."

Next week's ep looks to rock, too. Here's hoping...

I taped the episode while I was out last night, then watched it when I got home. Ten minutes before the end, something weird happened: the picture froze and all sound stopped, all the way until the end of the hour. (It might have been a cable screw-up.) So I saw the CSI gang figure out who the sneaky gender-reassignment doctor was, go confront her, and then...GAH! I was pretty sure I could figure out her motivations from what I'd already seen, but still, how annoying not to see the full final confrontation or the scenes from next week's episode!

Ah, thanks! So why did he cut out the Adam's apple, though? Or was that accidental with the throat-slashing?

As I was watching last night, it really made me appreciate how much better CSI: is than its two offspring, simply for the fact that while it can do an "intense" show, it can do it with a sense of humor, while still being sensitive to the issues at hand. Brass alone makes the show better for that reason. You spoke of how they didn't go for the easy jokes, and you were right. That there was any humor in it at all was amazing, and not something you'd see on Miami or NY.

It was a fabulous episode. We were watching and recording it on the DVR, I don't know why, but then something came up and we could only half pay attention to it, so I shut the set off. I could tell from the first ten minutes that this was going to be an episode I wanted to see every minute of. Watched it later and I was right.

Something that struck me, and it seems to be a criminal mindset thing (at least on TV): the attitude of the criminal that they are being "presecuted" by the police not because they killed someone, but because they are different in some way. Not going anywhere with that, just noticiing a particular point of view of a character type.

CSI: Miami is brilliant if you watch it for what it is: pure camp. My favorite moments are always the ones where David Caruso puts on his sunglasses, says something cryptic yet stupid ("And you know what they say...curiosity killed the cat.") and then backs slowly out of the picture like someone's waving a gun at him off-camera. LOVE it!
