lagilman: coffee or die (Boomer)

The Vet (and Boomer's bloodwork) has spoken. In addition to everything else, my CatofSize has diabetes.

Woo, fun times. It's a good thing I love that guy.

Unfortunately, because of the timing, this also means no Arisia for me. *sads*

However, Keith DeCandido has graciously volunteered to be "me" for my reading, so THAT at least will go on as scheduled...

Aw, poor kitty. I'm sorry, but glad he has you for a mom.

My last cat had diabetes for the final 18 months of his life (and he had a good long life). It takes a bit to get used to it (needles! Every day!) But once you figure out feeding schedules and medication levels, things work into a rhythm. My cat used to come remind me if I forgot his meds or was late because I got distracted. I'd still have to chase him around the house and catch him (that was part of the game, must chase me! But I won't hide under the bed where you can't reach me.). You do have to be aware of what he's eating and if he suddenly goes off his food, and adjust meds accordingly.

Much like humans, it's an entirely manageable condition. Unlike humans, you can't ask them how they're doing and have to spend a lot more time guessing and paying for the occasional bloodwork to verify how their blood sugar levels are at any given time.

Hugs to Boomer. My cat Aeowyn has something that causes her body to not fully process all the food she's eating. She's on the thin side, has huge poos, and is always hungry. Took her to the vet and we're trying a few things before we start meds. So not fun,.

My cat, Rocky, has been living with feline diabetes for about a year and a half now. He adapted well to it and will often come when called for his shot and is very cooperative, especially if I give him time to "get comfy."

I'd highly recommend checking out Diabetic Cats in Need (DCIN) on Facebook. I got a glucose meter from them and they have a ton of informational resources. It went a long way to putting my mind at ease and making me feel like Rocky and I could deal with this.

Poor Boomer. I hope it doesn't take too long to get his diabetes under control. My cat is at risk or diabetes, he gets checked regularly.

I was so looking forward to seeing you this weekend and getting books signed. Oh well, family and furbabies first.

Cat diabetes is treatable enough that some cats still thrive for quite some time after diagnosis. I kept a beloved diabetic boy going for five years (age ten to fifteen); we used to call him "William S. Burroughs, the junkie cat," because he loved getting his fix so much every day. He used to stand on my chest and awaken me with trumpeting meows on mornings when I overslept and missed his shot time.

Here's hoping that Boomer will last as long, or longer, as my junkie cat did!

Awwww, poor guy. I'm another one who had a diabetic cat (some 5 years of two-shots-a-day). Getting the insulin type/dosage took a while, but it was pretty smooth sailing after that.
