You can say that the majority of citizens are Christian, sure. That does not make the United States a 'Christian nation.' It certainly does not make the separation of Church and State "a myth."
Excuse me. I have to go check the Canadian immigration laws again.

Date: 2004-10-22 07:55 pm (UTC)The problem with emigrating is, I don't think they will take me at my age unless I am working in a critically needed industry. I had friends leave 25 years ago, when Reagan came in--they just became citizens last year.
They have RMTs, and a lot of writers, too....
And I consider myself at least half Christian, which is the really ridiculous thing. 60% of the Christians have to leave, too...

Not saying I will, not saying I won't. Saying I'm aware of possibilities and options. And history. And my right to choose.

The man who, in a letter to John Adams, wrote: "The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus by the Supreme Being in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter."
Then there's the Treaty of Tripoli of 1797, which stated: "The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion."
Here are some great quotes proving just how "Christian" the Founding Fathers were
Also, I'm right there with you on looking north. I hear Toronto is a lovely place to live.

Date: 2004-10-23 01:49 pm (UTC)Too many people think weird things like that can't happen in this country. Damn right they can--we had concentration camps in this country. We had McCarthy. If we stop paying attention, all $%$# can break loose.
Down here it has--our state reps had to hide out of state to try and prevent massive gerrymandering of the state house and senate. Didn't work--which is partly why this election is so important.
So I can joke about it, but this is my country, and I'm willing to write letters, to demonstrate, to vote...and to think about more drastic measures if necessary.
This country will not become fascist on my watch, not if I can help it. That's my fear--that people do not understand what "fascism" means....

Date: 2004-10-24 11:04 pm (UTC)The one thing about that article that most people are not aware of is in the penultimate paragraph. Barton is also on the board of advisers of the Providence Foundation, a Christian Reconstructionist group Christian Reconstruction is a small movement of radical, extreme right wing, christian activists that believe that Christians are destined to control all secular and religous institutions in the world. There is a subset of this that believe that the USA is destined to be the force that sees christianity take over. It is often refered to as Dominionism. They believe that God intended this, and that it will help to bring about the end of the world so that they (as good God fearing Christians) will go up to heaven in the rapture. If this is not scary enough, they support such wonderful concepts as going back to biblical law such as stoning etc. We are talking about a christian version of the taliban here in America. George Bush, John Ashcroft, Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Antonin Scalia are rumored to all be members of this movement. To get a better catch on it, check out these links:
