Well. The laptop is booting up. Under protest, and noisily. But the keyboard is dead, despite all attempts to revive it.

Thankfully, the data appears to be intact, so transferring it shouldn't (knowck wood) be too much of a headache. And I had done an offsite backup on the two novels-in-progress just this week. Am still deeply annoyed.

I may need to buy a new laptop, six months ahead of schedule. Grrr. I still prefer Dell, despite this recent kerfuffle -- anyone have any model recs to make? (this was am Inspiron 5100)

Stick with what you like. Go with Dell. Check out their current line of Inspirons. The 5160 has some nice features, but then again, I like the entire Inspiron model line.

I use a Dell Latitude D800 - plenty of power, very nice wide screen, okay on the weight. Had it for about seven months now and happy so far.

Best,
Joe

You might try a visit to J and R in lower Manhattan. John just bought a laptop there -- an IBM ThinkPad -- but what is terrific about it is that there are four aisles of laptops that you can fondle, pick up, play with the keyboards and screens, and so on. It's an excellent way to figure out what you really like.

My own laptop is a Fujitsu tiny, because I wanted something that was really really portable. All the rest of our many household computers have been Dells, including the sleek desktop I am writing to you on now.'
