waiting for Irene, who apparently missed the memo about losing power when she hit ground, because the hurricane warning is reportedly being extended all the way up to Nova Scotia.

So far, occasional rain and gusts of wind. Nothing to get excited about, but that will change in a few hours.

I'm home, dry and safe, and really rather annoyed at the people on the news saying they'll stay put because "it's only a CAT 1." People, it's a HURRICANE. You are soft and squishy. A signpost/tree limb/small car going 70mph through the air is NOT.

SRSLY.

Everyone south along the line ok? Everyone north tucked in safe?

So far, it hasn't been more than windy rain. May it stay so.

The eye goes over at midnight. If part II is like part I, things should be okay here.

Tucked in across the river. Friends in VA and DC still have power.

You can almost sense the Darwin awards to be handed out later....

Tucked into the comfy chair with the kitty & watching Doctor Who marathon. Lots of wind & rain but the big stuff expected in the next hour or two and through 2 a.m.

I've been through several hurricanes - and yeah, big stuff vs. squishy humans = humans LOSE. Stupid people are stupid.

Hang in there & keep safe!

I have Worries about some of the trees around the house and yard, but everything else is put away, and we're far enough inland that it'll probably be "only" 80 mph gusts. Uh-huh. Not planning on going anywhere tomorrow, believe me.

Hope you stay safe too! It looks like the City is going to have a lot to cope with.

So far so good in northern VA. We've Internet, as well as cat, tea and power. However, I stocked up on port, just in case, and I mean to drink some. :-)

This, exactly. There's no such thing as "only" a Cat 1. Hell, I've seen tropical storms tear roofs off of house and send tree limbs through windows.

Stay safe, hon. I'll be thinking (and worrying) about you, and all of my friends in the storm's path.

I've rarely heard someone go from Professional Worried to Real Worried on-air like that.

*shudder* I can imagine. And Irene is one big mother of a storm, meaning her effects will be felt over a large area and for a long damned time. I mean, I'm in Tampa Bay, and we've been getting serious 30-40mph winds kicked out by this thing.

I googled images for category 1 hurricane damage. First image up is a McDonald's sign. The colors are right and the yellow thing used to be a double arch, so I'm pretty sure it used to be a McDonald's sign.

I'll be calling my folks tomorrow to see how they're faring.

Stay safe.

My son in Norfolk is fine, or so he reports.

That's good to hear ... also because I have a cousin in Norfolk, so I've been wondering what's been going on there.

Last track I saw had the center of Irene headed up over Vermont/New Hampshire into Quebec as a non-tropical storm.

Of course I picked *this* weekend to come home to Baltimore....

As of now, it's lashing rain and wind outside, but nothing too impressive (from indoors, at least.) Hopefully this is the worst of it.
