Say the words.
Mar. 31st, 2011 09:42 pmThe Florida GOP thinks "uterus" is "language that would be considered inappropriate for children and other guests" and should not be used.
I suppose they'd rather use terms like "hoohah" for anything between a woman's legs, all the way up to her "boobies." Because Dog forbid that the actual proper name for a woman's anatomy be used - it's okay for them to take away our right to make decisions about what happens to our bodies, but not to talk about it?
(the actual discussion wasn't even about that - the speaker made a one-liner about his wife incorporating her uterus to get a break... which is actually sadly funny and maybe not such a bad idea. But I digress)
The point is: words are power. Naming things gives you power. Being told you cannot use a word - especially the proper medical/biological word for a part of the human body, because it is offensive? Is disempowering. Also, dismissive. And insulting to any visitors of any age.
[and I suspect had the speaker made a reference to, say, testicles, a fuss would not have been made. But that's just my suspicion]
I think the GOP has done quite enough disempowering already. They can take my words when they pry them out of my cold, dead mouth. And maybe not even then.
Uterus. Labia. Clitoris. Vagina. Breasts. Ovaries. Cervix. Fallopian Tubes. Hymen. Perineum. Anus. Vulva.
I got 'em, I name 'em, I own 'em.

Date: 2011-04-01 08:45 pm (UTC)And regardless of my clear inability to count or type accurately this morning, the Heffalump Party leadership is still a pride of d*ckheads (like a pride of lions, in which the leadership role goes to the prancing males while most of the work gets done by the females).

Date: 2011-04-01 03:49 pm (UTC)Dear Lord, I can't believe the fracking priggishness of these people. It's about as bad as the wild and crazy kids in my sixth grade homeroom last year complaining to me about ski mag pictures with bare-skinned (but appropriately covered) people in it as being "inappropriate for school." Considering their behavior in general, and that they could not clearly explain to me why they thought that picture was inappropriate, I suspected they were just pulling my finger. No coincidence that the ones complaining were amongst the worst-behaved (including inappropriate commentary with scatological and sexual elements).
It's the same mentality. "It makes ME think the wrong things, therefore no one else can see/use it because I have no self-control, and no desire to exercise or develop it." The snigger and grope school of thought that projects blame on everything but themselves.

Date: 2011-04-02 07:26 am (UTC)What are they, 12? What do they want to call it? An Easy Bake Woobie? A Baby Pooper? Or are we just to pretend that women don't have organs. Which will take us right back to the Victorian idea that nice girls don't get all tingly and have orgasms. Hmmm. Wonder what the GOP wants to call those? Oh, wait. We're not allowed. Female orgasms are just a form of hysteria, to be avoided with cold baths and long walks.
It seems to me that the hard right are making war on women's rights, right along with education, unions, children, "liberal" media (our npr stations motto? "No Rant, No Slant") and anyone else they can think of.
I'll stop now before my head explodes. I'm channeling Lewis Black.
