Feb. 19th, 2011 07:34 amSo I'm working on the rather intensive revisions to THE SHATTERED VINE (because mine editor came through and found all the bits I had, to use Carol Berg's term, covered with putty and hoped no-one would notice), and noodling at Bonnie #4, which is on hold until I finish (argh, Must Finish!) and I had a line come to me that had the ring of perfect and utter truth so I grabbed a pen and wrote it down.
"I try to be good, I really do. But sometimes you just gotta ask: did your momma have to hit you so hard with the stupid stick?"
And I thought at first that it was Bonnie, but then I realized, no - it's the voice of the main character in the next book scheduled to be written.
Damn it, Danny, shut up and sit down and wait your turn. It's crowded enough in here already.
[This does not normally happen to me. I knew Danny was going to be trouble.]
And so I have a full pot of coffee, a finished (close enough) bathroom, the spring-like tease of yesterday has dropped back to seasonable temperatures, and I have nowhere to go until Sunday afternoon. I don't expect to finish the revisions this weekend, but by dog I'm going to make a dent in it...
EtA:: Just got to the scene that's being used for the cover art. Oh, ok, so that's where the artist got that idea.... #yesIforgotIwrotethat

Date: 2011-02-19 04:14 pm (UTC)Sometimes, it's still a shock to me when our editor sends a four-page single-spaced revision letter, and I read it and realize that I still have weeks (even a month) of work ahead of me to complete a book.
But at least you only have to deal with voices in your head when that happens (smiles). The worst time in my memory happened when our editor wanted a complete overhaul on a Noble Dead novel (complete with cutting the first two chapters and reworking the entire set up), and after my initial shock, I realized she was right, but JC staunchly disagreed, and so, even after that initial devastation, I had to fight him to convince him she was right. Taking on JC is no fun. That was a tough week. I actually started missing my old job.
