The home stretch? Maybe?

Discussion about the shelves - the wall I want to put them on is not entirely straight. They can either hard-glue them to the wall, in addition to the studs, or I can buy new shelves that can adapt to the irregularity. I suspect option two is the smarter choice, but who has time to go shelf-shopping? Maybe it will go to the top of This Weekend's plans. *sigh* Also, there was some damage to the woodwork that needs to be fixed. Argh. *adds to the punchlist* was fixed.

They're here, installing the vanity now. Once that's done, the bathroom will LOOK finished, even though the plumbing still needs to finished off and small details (the inset shelving, etc) taken care of....

The refinished tub isn't perfect - there are a few flaws on the surface -- but really, who looks that hard at a tub? And if you did, would you admit it?
---------------

Distracted from work by the utterly reprehensible LA Weekly article on Lara Logan, and my response to it. OMFG people, and you wonder why I hate humanity sometimes? (no discussion of the women and soldiers who came to her aid, just quotes from a guy saying "I'd totally rape her." But of course they don't post HIS name or photo.... I wonder if he'd be so brazen if he knew his mother/wife/sister/daughter/girlfriend would see it? [answer: not a chance]. Rape Culture in effect, once again. And it make syou wonder how many other women were attacked during the protests/celebrations, and nobody outside their families paid any attention because they weren't American reporters?

And people turn their heads and look away and make excuses, rather than taking an active stand. Urgh. *renews commitment to not-being-passive, even in small ways*

12:30: No plumber today. Plumber tomorrow. Medicine cabinet installed - light fixture slightly (1/4 inch, but visible to me) off-center now. Argh! Have to decide if this is annoyance or real problem.

12:50: workmen head out for lunch, and in the quiet I think of a scene that would fix problem in revision...but require me to rewite a scene in last third of book. Argh. But I like the scene, it has a nice symmetry to it, and hey, revisions are all about rewriting, right? *twitch*

2:15: The shelves are ex-shelves. I know what I need, and eventually I will acquire 'em. (so much for a shortcut. I should know better, by now). The only things lacking (I think) are the inset shelves (being made) and the plumbing hookup of the sink (and a new toilet, which still seems to be An Issue.) And, y'know, painting the door and ceiling and trim. But that's for later.....

2:20: and they're cleaning up and packing out the debris. I'm not quite at the confetti stage yet, but I think it's time to start chilling the Champagne....?

[not that I can afford Champagne, at this point. But a decent bottle of Prosecco should do]

This story was horrifying to me, and as you said, this was probably not an isolated incident and we only knew about this because it happened to a network journalist. I was glad to see the mention of the women and soldiers who eventually rescued her, goodness knows if she would have survived had they not done so, and it says something to me about the women there that they put themselves at risk to help another woman no matter where she was from.

Last year, in the weeks following Dragon*Con, there we numerous people who talked about how they and their friends had been assaulted in various ways at the con.....in public areas as well as hallways and stairways of the hotels. I do recall in particular that the football fans last year (mostly drunken groups of young guys from the schools playing football at the bowl game that weekend) were particularly obnoxious, and security was definitely on edge.

But I really was shocked to hear about the dozens of incidents that had taken place. Everyone on the D*C LJ community had serious discussions on preventing this from happening again. We reached out to the management of the host hotels, we have been banding together, and everyone is committed to looking out for everyone else next year.

So, until we can get rid of that culture of rape acceptability, get across to people in general and men specifically that no means NO, we all have to do the best we can to be aware of what's going on around us, and to back each other up when needed.

That article is beyond reprehensible. And for a woman to have written it, too... Am speechless.
Good news re home straight.

I figure this is an OK post to say this on given your comment about rape culture/etc, but I just finished reading PACK OF LIES (the Library finally got it in!) and I wanted to actually tell you how much I enjoyed it. It's been awhile since I liked and appreciated a UF book on a lot of different levels, and I really liked how I didn't see the solution coming but it wasn't a non sequitor, and how you handled the issues, left some things subtly implied, and a lot of other things.

Really looking forward to book 3.

The Egyptian military is looking for these animals. If caught they plan to publicly hang them.
