The revolution has accomplished its goal. Now the long haul begins. Can Egypt move into the future without falling into the dangers of the past? Can they build a stronger people in terms of education and welfare and wealth, and embrace a peaceful coexistence with those of different beliefs both inside and out of their borders?

My hope is that they remain a shining light, an example of what is possible, and that they drag the rest of the Middle East -- and the rest of the world, East and West, north and south, -- into following suit. I know it's probably impossible, highly improbable. But improbable is not impossible, and highly impossible is still entirely possible.

You almost certainly meant "highly improbable" in the last line, not "highly impossible."

And to be more serious befitting what has happened, I'm pulling for the country to make this work, too. I still remember getting wrapped up in Romania's revolution back in 1989, and how bloody and painful it was for that country. And, earlier that year, there was the Tienanmen Square crackdown, possibly the worst possible outcome for such a protest. (Gods, Chris, that's a bloodless way to put it. My words aren't at their best tonight. They aren't conveying the pain of what happened.)

Egypt has a chance to make this work. The solidarity its citizens have displayed, especially those of different religions getting together to say It's not about what religion we are!, is heartening. May the difficulties be manageable and the results wonderful.

The terrifying thing about Tienanmen Square is that it's been erased in the history of its people. The younger generation? They don't know. That's why I'm such a proponent of live-tweeting the revolution. The best aid to freedom is awareness.

As to Egypt's religious tolerance.... as a Jew, part of my heart is very worried right now, politically. My opinions on the current Israeli government can only be expressed in particularly pungent Yiddish curses, but I have no desire to see what had been a chance for peace fall to political backlash.

I have been moved to frequent tears at the courage of so many of the Egyptians these past weeks. To confront the brutality of the secret police, to gamble that the tanks would not roll ...

it is awesome. I hope and pray that the momentum continues in a positive direction that is beneficial to all their people.
