lagilman: coffee or die (bigger boat)

So, when last we left our hapless bathroom, it was torn down and showing bare walls and rough flooring, awaiting the arrival of the plumber this morning.

When our Mighty Homeowner got up, all was well. When she went to make coffee, all was well. When she talked to the Guy mid-transit home from PNG, all was well. When she sat down at the computer...she heard the sound of...water.

Rushing down the (bare joist) walls.

Panic - and an adrenaline surge like WHOA - ensued.

After (finally) finding the super and mrs. super in the basement (dealing with flooding there, whee), panic surged even higher -- and then discovered that no, her contractors hadn't damaged the pipes, a toilet on the 4th floor had busted. Bad, but not her fault, specifically. Yes, the water was being shut off. Yes, everything was under control.

Mind you, the tile-less floor now has puddles of water and my towels are all soaked and filthy, but hey, at least there was no damage to the (missing) walls, and I already had workmen scheduled, right?

Meanwhile, I can't stop coughing from the rushing around and adrenaline spike. Are we having fun yet?

Updates as they happen. Hopefully, I'll be able to get some writing done, too...

--------------

10:10. Plumber has arrived. Plumber has surveyed the situation and gone off to talk to the Super. I am advised that they will be "setting up camp and staying all day." The cats seem entirely unfussed by this new invasion, although Boomer is hiding behind my desk chair as I type this.

11:00: Super and plumber are kibbitzing...or super is kibbitzing and plumber is trying to work. I am trying to work also, but it's not really happening. Futzing with new computer installs, instead. Bad writer. Stressed writer.

11:30 Leak has started again. Plumber is still unfazed, so I am trying to also remain unfazed. Not working. Y'know, this is a lovely building, really. It's just occasional water issues....

11:55: Leak stopped. Plumber working. Plumber's assistant quite charming at soothing homeowner. CatofSize freaked out again by all this Noise!

12:10: Homeowner abandons cats, plumbers, and pretending to work to go to...the dentist (sad, when that's preferable...)

1:20: Back from dentist, no trauma teeth-wise or bathroom wise. No further leaks, progress progresses. All goodness.

3:15: A problem spotted in the piping under the tub (which is the building's problem, not mine). Discussion, rough estimate of costs vs my likelihood of being reimbursed, and the decision to go ahead and do it (rather than risking Very Expensive Repairs later). A hole in the floor later...

3:45: day one of The Plumbing is done. Tomorrow will bring either drywall/greenboard, or more plumbing, or both. Tune in tomorrow to find out...

3:47: the cats emerge, looking for food.

3:50: my workday begins.

So sorry - I can at least come inside and get away from the snow - having the problems inside with you is much worse.

Well, it all turned out OK in the end. The leaks aren't any fault of yours. *thumbs up*

I see some towels coming in the mail for you when the bathroom is finished though...;-)

on the positive side, you already had the walls off, so it will dry out quickly.

OMG, how awful.

Don't talk to me about floods ::shudders::

When I had the hot water tank in the Brighton flat replaced, the contractor left a crucial tap turned on, so that overnight, water poured out...and into the art gallery two floors down. Thankfully it did not damage any paintings and they were very nice about it, but it put years on me. Hope the rest of your renovations go smoothly.

(The bathroom contractor also removed the toilet and then realised that the replacement hadn't arrived. So they had to plumb it back in).
