1. I have 4 nice, sturdy, currently-painted-black wooden kitchen chairs, free to a good home. You will need to come pick them up, tho.

2. I need to find a bookcase, between 5-6 feet wide, no more than 4 feet high, between 8-10 inches deep. Apparently, my only option is to have them custom-built. Oy. If anyone a) knows of a place that sells such a thing or b) knows a carpenter in the NYC area who is willing to work for not-an-arm-and-both-legs, let me know, please. I pay a finder's fee in books. :-)

2. Anyone need a bedroom set? Mine is in excellent condition (cherry wood) but have come to realization that it's just Too Much Space for me (I have two closets, I don't need that many drawers!). Again, this would have to be you-pick-up, and a negotiable cost. One large (6-drawer) dresser, two nightstands, and a lingerie chest.

My brother is a carpenter in Lee, MA, but I know he's done quite a bit of work for people in NYC since it's not that far a drive. I can send you a private message with his phone number if you like.

LJ says I can't send you a message, so I'll give you his email address instead: KeeseeFamily@gmail.com. His name is Matt Keesee.

Have you already tried Gothic Cabinet? They sometimes have unusual sizes as floor pieces.

Too bad. This (http://nycremodeler.com/Custom-Built-In-Bookcases-Wall-Units-Book-Shelves-Cases-Shelving-Builtin-Bookshelves-Wallunits-nyc-ny-new-york-city-brooklyn.php?gclid=CMzFkPWZ3aUCFVB95QodFCKK1Q) place appears to do free in-home estimates for custom bookcases.

onewayfurniture.com has a huge selection of sizes. Be warned though--some assembly required.

I know it's Wal-Hell, but we have a couple of these as well as a 5 shelf one-

Fairly cheap, very sturdy and looks very nice too. They're just shy of 4ft wide, 36 inches tall and are 13 inches deep though.

This one's just over 11" deep- http://www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-and-Gardens-Autumn-Lane-Bookcase-White/11011730

I'm thinking you may have to try a Barewood Furniture type of place. Or what you were considering in having them handcrafted.}:/

Is there an Amish Farmer's market nearby?

I talk to the folks at mine and they work with crafters in their community, bring the stuff up when they come and take the funds back.

By pure coincidence, I've been looking for paperback-sized shelving, too.

This (http://www.csnoffice.com/filters/47-in.-or-more-l38-A4686~1-A327~2-A328~5.html) is the site with the best filters I've found thus far. Sadly, I don't have your height constraints, so my top pick is 5' high.

(Just in case that's a flexible limit, here it is (http://www.hayneedle.com/home/accent-furniture/bookcases_premierwidepaperbackbookcaseblack.cfm?srccode=cii_10043468&cpncode=19-55289588-2&source=channel_intelligence_shopzilla). From a different site, incidentally)

It also looks like the search is far from perfect. Despite my having filtered by depth to 11" or less, I came across at least two that were 12" or more :(

Check for "Unfinished furniture" in your local listings or in a search. One reason why you will seldom have shelves wider than 4' is the sag factor--personal experience. Getting two 3' cases without capitols or the like, that can be put side by side without a lot of space between them, works well enough.

I have overloaded shelves too often.

I do hope you can get what you seek, at a reasonable price.
