Google tossed up a late but nice reader-review of BLOOD FROM STONE, which had a line in it that really pleased me: "This is the last book in the retriever series and as much as I enjoy this world I think it was the right time to end it."
I felt the same -- I had put Wren through her paces, and she was resting quietly in my head, while other characters were speaking up. It's tempting, often, to say "okay, one more" (especially if someone is offering you money to do it!), but listening to your gut on things like this is important. Of course, had they offered me six figures... I'd like to think I would have negotiated something I could live with, artistically. But six figures (to the left of the decimal point) is a LOT of money.
Of course, as I type this, I am working on a book where Wren plays an important role.., but she's a player in the scene, not the spotlighted character. She says and does what she needs to, and then gets out of the way. I suspect she -- and Sergei, and Wren and PB and all the other players of the Cosa Nostradamus - will be doing that quite a bit, going forward. It's one of the joys of writing an extended community...
EtA: Bonus bit of #WiP from PSI#4:
“Oh dear,” she said, in a tone of voice that put every nerve I had on edge. There's “oh dear that’s too bad” and then there’s “oh dear, this is very bad” and hers was the latter.
For those of you, btw, who are confused or uncertain about where to start or how to read:
RETRIEVERS
Staying Dead
Curse the Dark
Bring it On
Burning Bridges
Free Fall
Blood From Stone
PSI
Hard Magic (approx set against CtD/BiO)
Pack of Lies (2/11)
Tricks of the Trade (11/11)
Untitled #4 (2012)

Date: 2010-11-17 03:10 pm (UTC)I'm getting tense confusion from that: "There was ... and there is ... and hers was ..."?
(I make the assumption that "there's" is not short for "there was".)

Date: 2010-11-17 03:22 pm (UTC)I just got stuck in copy-edit mode. And I can't get out!
(I have a nasty feeling that the only solution is an overdose of LOLCATS.)

(mainly because I'm feeling contrary, but also because the stories are scattered from all over the timeline, so it's sort of pointless to say 'read them in this order.' You can read them anyway anyhow you choose, and they'll either introduce you to characters, or explain things about them, depending on how much you know already.)

Date: 2010-11-17 07:05 pm (UTC)You put up a post that says "read your stories in this order (and presumably also says buy your books) and when reminded that there are other stories in the series you could plug, you say no? No offense, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out retrievers #1 should be read before retrievers #2. But it's precisely the short stories (which are collected in your collection Stories of the Cosa Nostradamus (http://www.smashwords.com/b/12960) you're welcome for the free plug) that are not so easily ordered without author input.
On a separate note, thanks for the free sneak peak at the WIP.

Date: 2010-11-17 07:19 pm (UTC)My point is, it doesn't matter what order you read the short stories in. They are self-contained, for the most part, and reading them in any order won't confuse or lessen the enjoyment. The books, on the other hand, tend to build on each other and it can get confusing if you jump around. Hence my listing the order.
And thank you for the plug. :-)
[I was pseudo-sulky because here I was trying to do something nice, and first I got copyedited and then I got scolded. And it made me wonder, briefly, why I even bothered...]
