Oh I have this rant i want to do about the apparent illiteracy of an entire generation, but I have neither time nor energy so I will simply say incIdent, people. TruLY. PleASUre. This is your language. Learn how to use it, please.

[illiteracy is not txtspk. Txtspk presumes knowledge to alter.]

How about a rant about critical thinking and logic? If we're going to hit on language, we might as well go for the trifecta.

Seconded.

As much as that little word right there, in and of itself, tends to be part of the culture that you're discussing? I still say seconded. I completely agree.

I'm frightened to report that critical thinking, logic and analytical thought are all missing from several medical students I've worked with in the last decade. They understand the concept of diagnosis, but not at analysis. It's truly odd to talk to some of them.

I have to say, the ones that drive me nuts are "loose" being used in place of "lose", and "your" being used where it should be "you're". Those just drive me INSANE.

With me it's the feral apostrophe - and particularly in the it's/its incarnation. REALLY PEOPLE - it is (THAT would be an it's, right there) not that hard.

In one recent copy-edit version of the MS which came back to me for checking, someone somewhere had transposed an its into an it's, and since it drives me batty and I would NEVER make that error myself it leapt out at me with fangs bared - but what REALLY rankles is that if I had somehow missed it there would be a book out there with this egregious error, which I loathe so much, there in it for all to see and it would be MY name on the cover...

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what was the trigger for the rant?

Actually, spelling was my worst academic subject in school. Thank god for spell check.

If I could draw, I'd give up writing novels and make comic books. There's a bunch of people who don't care about genre lines.

At this juncture I should mention that it's possible to make comics without knowing how to draw (http://www.sunsetgrillcomic.com/).

(disclosure: I'm married to the author, and we've just returned from Small Press Expo (http://www.spxpo.com/))

Oh, and here's what you can do with a bit of Photoshop post-work (http://www.davidcsimon.com/crimsondark/index.php?view=comic&strip_id=379).

THanks. I'll have to save that info.
