his memory for a blessing..
Sep. 8th, 2010 11:07 pmOne of the things that Facebook has been very good for is reconnecting me with my old friends from high school -- more, reconnecting me with the high school itself.
Via that connection, I have learned that this week Columbia lost one of its best. Dr. Richard Arthur George passed away yesterday morning, peacefully, at home. He was 91 years old, and is survived by, in addition to his family, countless years -- hell, decades -- of students who knew him as "Doc George," one of the best, craziest, most inventive, over-dramatic, and inspiring English teachers CHS ever knew.
In an interesting turn of events, in a few weeks I will be in the vicinity of Dunkirk, where Doc saw battle during WWII, when he was part of a British force driven back by the Germans and evacuated to Dover. I hadn't planned to visit there... but now I think perhaps I will.
