I was going to do an idiot's (me) guide's to opera review of the Met's production of "Armida," which I saw yesterday, but the first significant humidiy of the season is sapping my will do do much of anything other than file paperwork and drink iced tea and listen to Bruce.
I must be prepping for summer.
So: short reaction: I found the first act slow (giving me time to enumerate the many ways the plot is silly) but the middle section was wonderful and the ending absolutely riveting. Four hours is a long time to ask a meerkat to sit still, even with intermissions. There is no bad with an opera that has roles for SIX tenors, incl a piece à trois voix, OMG. Brownless was very good, I need to write a character for Peter Volpe to play, just to hear him talk in my head, and Renee Fleming is just amazing.
Overall, production-wise, the NYT pretty much nailed it, for me.

You threw me for a loop, here . . .
Date: 2010-05-02 03:30 pm (UTC)I graduated high school on Long Island (a long time ago) with a fellow named Peter Volpe. Starred in a lot of the school musicals. Wanted to be an opera singer when he grew up. Guess he made it, huh? It's nice to know.
Thank you for that. Made my day. I'll have to send the URL for his webpage to my mom.

Date: 2010-05-02 07:30 pm (UTC)Had a visual of a Meerkat Opera, where they bob up and down according to what action is going on the stage, with them all straight up for the major scenes. With of course, breaks to let them vocalize right back at the story.
