lagilman: coffee or die (truth to power)

Interesting possibly only to myself, but I make note of it anyway: some of you may have noticed I'm no longer overtly activist* on this site**.

It's not that I've stopped talking and working toward what I think is fair and just. I don't think that everything's peaches and keen-wow, now. I've certainly not gotten too jaded or bitter or complacent to pick up my sign and march, metaphorically or otherwise.

I'm just tired, I think, of trying to drag other people along with me. There's only so much energy in the meerkat, and I'm trying to do an awful lot each day. If you're here, and reading, I'm going to assume a certain level of awareness and intelligence. You know what's going on in the world, or where/how to find out. You have the ability to decide what you believe, and what hills you are willing to fight for, and which ones you are willing to die on.

And if not, then all my posts and pushing won't change your apathy.

I might be wrong, though. You might be wanting to do something but not knowing where to start. You might want to gather new viewpoints, rather than try to change my mind or have me try to change yours.

If so, feel free to mention that. I blog to clarify my own thoughts, sometimes, but I'm happy to be useful to other people, too. :-)

*I say activist rather than political because I've never been much for politicizing matters; for me most of my activism is on a "be true, be fair, be humane" level rather than doctrine. I have a great distaste for doctrine of any flavor.

**okay, by the standards of the Bush League years,anyway...

Actually, I was just thinking of making a post asking why, in general, my friends are posting much less about current events than they used to. For the first time in most of a decade on LJ, I'm considering going to Google News for the morning's headlines because I no longer see them here.

Actually I much prefer the post Bush "mostly activist free" nature of the blog. I read your blog for:

1) Stuff about writing
2) Stuff about New York
3) Stuff about food
and last but certainly not least:
4) Stuff about cats!

Meow! (Translation: you haven't posted any pictures of cats lately :)

Woof! (Translation: Puppy pictures can be substituted provided you fill out Form 8046B and get approval by 50% of the House, and 2/3's of the Senate)

I've stopped posting anything remotely relating to politics or religious tolerance on my blog. For one . . . my agent suggested that I stop making political posts--even though he emails me Sarah Palin jokes (smiles).

But the state of the far right in this country seems so incredibly hostile and toxic, that I ended up having to shut off the "allow anonymous posts" function and only allow registered users--because all the real nutty nuts were posting anonymously. Then when they started using sock puppet handles with no information whatsoever on their user page, I ended up "banning" one person's user name and changing my settings to where I need to read and "unscreen" anything posted by "non-friends," and now I'm more careful who I add to my friends list.

It's sad, but like you, the whole experience was simply too draining on my positive energy. It's better for my spirit to just chat about cooking, writing, and gardening. Maybe I should have listened to my agent in the first place.

I love your activist posts. I'm sorry that you don't feel up to posting more of them.
