Yes, another food post. Spending the day amending a draft on the line-by-line level is fascinating when you're doing it, but sort of boring to blog about. And unless you want to hear about the results of my fitness test this morning at the gym..

yeah, thought not.

So. Food, in honor of the upcoming holiday:

The good things about Passover:

Macaroons, charoset, and matzo brei*.

(for you heathens: matzo brei and charoset)

The bad things about Passover:

Macaroons have more calories per bite than cheesecake, charoset triggers my digestive difficulties, and I'm addicted to matzo brei. Seriously. I'm halfway through my serving** and I'm thinking "I'd like to make another."

Today (before meeting friends for the Last Pizza), I'm making my contribution to the Seder: a sort of crack-tastic caramel-chocolate-butterscotch toffee thing*. Nom. The sooner that's out of the house, the better off I'll be.

*trust Jews to take something called "the bread of affliction" and find ways to make it yummy. It's sort of our genetic hobby

**matzo brei is also possibly the only thing I make without fiddling with the recipe each time. There's no need: it's exactly what I want it to be, as-is.

I know! I saw that and my first thought was, "I want the recipe!"

Being the helpful soul that I am, I will allow you to send me some in the mail, just as a favor to you.

Date or apple on the charoset?

*is thinking that perhaps she'll make a batch of date charoset*

I make a damned fine charoset for a shiksa! I do most of it traditional ashkenaz, but always do a small bowl of sephardic, because it's a good excuse to use almonds, dates and ginger.

Recipe for caramel-chocolate-butterscotch toffee thingie, please?

charoset sounds lovely. I think "matzo brei" is called "pain azyme" in French. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain_azyme If so, I love the pain azyme I buy at the store.

They say they call "pain azyme" "hostie" when it's used for the eucharist.

No, they just give it the same. They don't actually serve matzo at the eucarist.

Well, considering that the Last Supper was a seder, it follows that the bread of the meal was actually matzo ... but I hear you.

Seriously. I'm halfway through my serving** and I'm thinking "I'd like to make another."

Yup. Every time.

I hang my head in shame to acknowledge that yes, I am a heathen. But I gotta say, matzo brei sounds from that recipe kinda like French matzo. Er, toast. Er, quitting while I'm ahead, here.

I am all about Passover food. Especially the macaroons. ZOMG the macaroons. (This is one of the reasons why I have achieved Honorary Jew status. *g*)
