The Merry Month of March... oy
Feb. 28th, 2010 06:24 pmSo. March. OMG, March.
On Wednesday I get on a big ole jet airliner and head off to Ireland. Three days to research details for a Current Project (you'll know it when you read it), and then P'con!
My schedule for PCon (Dublin):
Friday:
Opening Ceremonies
Satuday 10:00
Is it time for "Return of the Werewolves"?
Nick Harkaway; Brian J. Showers; Laura Anne Gilman; Maura McHugh; R.F.Long
Saturday 13:00
Social websites: Bane or boon in the genre fiction world?
Cheryl Morgan; Colin Harvey; Colin Smythe; Maura McHugh; Laura Anne Gilman
Saturday 15:00
Pictionary
(tremble in fear, o audience members!)
Sunday 10:00
Genre bending
Laura Anne Gilman; Paedar Ó Guilín; Cheryl Morgan; Mike Shevdon
Sunday 13:00
The Eagle has landed; in Dublin
John Vaughan; Laura Anne Gilman; Juliet E. McKenna; Cheryl Morgan
Sunday 15:00
"Returned for re-work"
Laura Anne Gilman; Michael Carroll; John Kenny
There will also, doubtless, be mad mugging for the camera by myself and Catie Murphy, to amuse our mutual agent and editor.
Then I return home on the 10th, and am off again on the 13th for the Liberty States Writers Conference (NJ):
10:30-11:20:
A Writer Looks at Editing: How to Help Your Editor Help You
11:30-12:20
A Q&A on writing horror & suspense
(w/ F Paul Wilson, Gary Frant, EF Watking)
3:00-4:00:
Working in More Than One Headspace: How to Juggle Genres
And then the next weekend I'm at Lunacon (NYS).
What Might Have Been
Friday 5:00 PM
Do you start with an event and work forward or do you envision a different world and then figure out where it changed. Can you move past the current date and still call it alternate "history"?
Ellen Asher, Carole Bugge, Laura Anne Gilman [M], Dennis McCunney
The Flavors of Fantasy
Friday 7:00 PM
Dark fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal romance. We all have a general idea of what high fantasy is and where it came from, but what about these new iterations? How do these 'newer' types differ from each other (and the other hundred fantasies that we didn't name)? Where do they come from? And, more importantly, where are they going?
Alma Alexander, Bianca D'Arc, Rosemary Edghill, Laura Anne Gilman, Tanya Huff [M]
Romance in SF&F
Saturday 10:00 AM
From sweeping epic fantasy to down home space opera, romance is finding its way into more and more traditional SF&F story lines with lots of crossover. In the old days, the SF&F produced by romance publishers wasn't very sophisticated. Is this changing as more small press and e-publishing opportunities arise? How much is too much romance? How much is too much detail on the SF&F side? Where's the balance?
Joshua Bilmes, Bianca D'Arc [M], Laura Anne Gilman, Stella Price, Pamela Scoville
Mystery Loves Company
Saturday 1:00 PM
A genre mystery, like a crime, is more than just means, motive, and opportunity. More than any other genre, a good mystery requires careful pacing and controlling the flow of information to the characters and the reader alike. The reveal must be surprising without coming completely out of the blue. With today's jaded audience, is it even possible to truly surprise a reader with a new twist on an old crime?
Laura Anne Gilman, Ron Goulart [M], Peter Heck, Marvin Kaye, Marianne Plumridge
To Write, Or To Have A Life? Can You Do Both?
Sunday 10:00 AM
The life of a writer is hard, yet rewarding, like a body-building genie. How to balance multiple projects and get them all done, without killing yourself. Being able to get them all done and still have an active social life...well, that may take more than one panel to explain.
Ty Drago, Laura Anne Gilman, Bob Greenberger, C.J. Henderson, Aaron Rosenberg [M]
Reading: Laura Anne Gilman
Sunday 11:30 AM
(be the first on your continent to hear something from The Vineart War, Book 2!)
Sunday 12:00 PM
Autographing: Laura Anne Gilman, Alexandra Elizabeth Honigsberg
And then a blessed month off, with only one trip to Boston scheduled, and...
and hey, then it's May, and I get to go to the Nebulas in Florida, and then BEA (thank god, just a subway trip) and then Balticon, and maybe spending some time in DC, after that.... and let's not even talk about July-October yet, okay? Thank god I can work on the road...

As I will have my wife's fancy car, it will be my job to drive us there.
