Ah, deep tissue massage. Because every now and then we need to remember how layered the meat puppet really is, and what it moves like when it's happy. *prrrrs* But now I smell like BioFreeze, and the cats are confused.

And, because if two people ask, odds are more of you are interested...

The timeline of the deal, as reconstructed from my notes and e-mails:

April 09: While noodling on something else entirely, I come up with an idea I'd like to do as a follow-up to the Bonnie books(a historical Cosa Novel). Madame Agent likes, a lot.

May/June 09: I come up with a contemporary option proposal, tying both Retriever and PSI timelines together.

November 09 As I'm finishing up the structural draft of the last book under contract (meaning the option phase will start soon), we send both proposals in. Harlequin not so hot on the historical idea. They like the plot of the contemporary, but want more Bonnie, less Wren (because of the time since the Retriever books).

November 09: I send Madame Agent the revised contemporary proposal.

December 09: More notes back from Luna, with one easily fixed worry. I consider, and revise.

January 10: I send the tweaked proposal, plus two follow-up books. Editor likes.

February 10: the proposal goes to the editorial board

February 10: a week later, an offer is put on the table. Three days later, Madame Agent signs off on the deal memo, and I get to breathe again.

Although I started working on the ideas a year previous, the clock really started in November. So, from first option submission to deal, it took three months almost exactly. Of those three months, I spent a month sure I'd never sell anything ever again, and a week knowing I would but not what the specifics would be. Ah, the wonderful certainty of a writer's life...

And now back to the revisions and whatnot, to keep the machine rolling!

From the outside looking in that appears to be pretty timely. From the inside looking out, I'm surprised if you had any fingernails left by the 10th.
