Hi. I'm home.

It was a long two weeks. Some great times, some good times, some times I could have lived without, but overall...yeah, it was two weeks.

*tired grin*

Welcome back to the Eastern Time Zone.

I don't suppose you're going to clarify the circumstances surrounding that title?

This bothers me too.

I jump to help anyone struggling with a suitcase--or too many heavy boxes at the Post Office--and when I see others ignoring someone who obviously needs assistance, I wonder what is wrong with people.

A few years ago when I was still living in Colorado, I often took a small-town community bus. One day, an eleven-year-old girl got off the bus and went to the front to try and get her bike off the rack, but the rack was too high for her, and she was struggling. I assumed the driver would hop off and quickly help her.

He just sat there, waiting impatiently and looking bored. A number of people toward the front of the bus just sat there watching her. I jumped up and told the driver not to leave without me. He grunted, and I got off to help the girl. Just thinking about this still bothers me.

On a different note, one of my first experiences in Portland was completely different. I was on the Light Rail, and there was a small crew of rough-looking teenage boys standing near me in their low-hanging jeans. The doors opened, and an older lady was standing on the other side with a double stroller and a pair of infant twins. To my surprise, those boys jumped to help her, gripping the stroller and carrying it inside for her and helping her get situated. They were nice boys, and that single action made me like Portland even better.

Ouch. One helluva a 'welcome back', I guess.

Sorry to hear that, and yes, that is very annoying when it happens. Honestly, I doubt that looking helpless is the secret; I've seen too many other helpless looking people get blown off by others to think otherwise.

Welcome back to NYFC. :P

I often have to schlep heavy bags through the subway system, and not once has anyone ever offered any help. But honestly, I'd fall over dead of shock if that actually happened in New York.
