lagilmanI decided this morning that it was too nice to spend all day chained to the desk. So I grabbed the manuscript, a pen, and a brown-bag lunch, and went to Central Park. Because that's what freelancers can do.

Boomer is peeved at being abandoned ALL DAY!
Pandora just wants to be fed.
I have no pictures of the G&T with fresh lime. But it was yummy.
I also have no pictures of the Whitney Houston lunchtime concert at SummerStage I stumbled onto, because the security guards looked mean.
One of the reasons I love living in the city is that it's less the city that never sleeps as the city that works a thousand different shifts. In the 'burbs, if I ventured out during the day, I saw housewives and professional moms [and some dads] and that was it. A barren wasteland of mall shoppers and errand-runners. In the city? I was surrounded by people who had the day off, people who were coming off shift, people who were going on-shift, people who were on their lunch break, people who were working in the park, people who were playing in the park... there's a community of people who work non-standard hours, so I never feel isolated or 'off.' That's really helpful, emotionally and mentally.

Date: 2009-09-02 12:14 pm (UTC)But it is true that the city (and city, probably, although I have my preferences) is a mental lifeline to those of us who are slightly out of step with the traditional 9-5 office workers. The energy is there whenever you need it -- and so is the relaxation. And choices....
