TGIF roundup
Jun. 19th, 2009 06:42 pm2600 new words on V2. 500 new words on Mustang. Accepted two new freelance projects, started on a pending one. Cleaned the apartment (because my office looked like, well, like a writer in the middle of a massive deadlines lived there). Exercised. Prepped stuff to be mailed.
And, finally, put together the notes from Monday's tasting. It was a madhouse, and I was in full hey-howarya mode, so my notes are a bit sketchy...
2007 Schafer-Frohlich Bockenauer Felseneck Spatlese -- meh. I don't know if it was because it suffered in comparison with the others or not, but all my notes say is 'meh' $34.
2007 Schafer-Frohlich Bockenauer Felseneck Spatlese Gold Capsule (GK)
-- I liked this fine, but not enough to take down any specific notes, and at $60 it needed to blow me away. Pass.
2007 Karthauserhof Spatlese Trocken -- this was very nice -- "spatlese trocken' means it was made from riper fruit, but in a dry style. I tend to really like these, since you get the full fruit taste and the bright acidity. $40
1997 Karthauserhof Auslese -- Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous. Smooth and fruit-ripe with white peaches, and lingering, but with that brightness I was talking about above. What you hope happens as you age a wine -- the elements merge and mellow into something even greater. $56. I was tempted, but didn't buy any.
2006 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Spatlese -- Strong peach flavor and acidity but tasted slightly unbalanced to me. $31
2007 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Spatlese -- sweeter than I like, but with a smooth white peach taste and a silky mouthfeel. Very nice if that's what you're looking for. $38.
2007 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Spatlese -- very nice, smooth and sweet. Again, too sweet for me (not trocken) $40
2007 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese -- same again, although slightly 'brighter' and more interesting. $60
2005 Wegeler Bernkasteler Doctor Spatlese -- smooth and pleasant but not an 'individual' wine. $49
2006 Wegeler Bernkasteler Doctor Spatlese -- too sweet for me, with creaminess but no sparkle $47
2007 Pfeffingen Scheurebe Spätlese -- my notes say VNW which means "very nice wine" which is like saying someone has a lovely personality. $33
2007 Pfeffingen Scheurebe Auslese Gold Capsule -- didn't get to try any. $35.
2007 Monchhof Estate -- a little too ripe in the throat for me, but an excellent value, compared to the others being poured. $18
2006 Monchhof Erdner Prälat Spatlese -- got there too late, they were out. Drat it. :-(
2005 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Spatlese -- a very nice, clean and bright wine, with good finish. $29
2006 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Spatlese -- Lovely, bright and beautiful peach and sweet stone -- my platonic ideal of a German Reisling. $34
The guys said that 2006 was a challenging year, but I think they mostly rose to the challenge. 2007 is supposed to be solid across the board.
Meanwhile, elsewhere I was asked to participate in a meme, and came across this question:
10. What's your philosophy on life?
My answer: "Think it through, but don't hesitate."
How about you? What's your philosophy/motto?
