So, I have decided that, at this Saturday's signing, for every book that I (and anyone else who wants to join me) sells, a coin* from our very own pockets will be deposited into a jar.

At the end of the signing, the change will be donated to a charity. My usual preferred charities, as long-timers here know, are animal shelters and local food banks. So.. where should the money go?

[Poll #1417595]

* probably a dime for each mass market, and a quarter for each trade, but that's not final. At least a dime per book. And yes, pre-orders to be picked up later will count towards the donations!

If you can keep them out of jail, then the food bank.

Pets are outrunning humans 2/1 at the moment . . .

Hey, I can understand that.

*laughs* The bail fund was just too tempting. But if they behave (or at least aren't tossed in jail), then the food bank, because I think it's easier to raise money for big-eyed pets than big-eyed people...

You can actually tell a lot about a person by asking suddenly, just out of the blue, "What is your favorite charity?"

If a person answers something like, "Cancer research," instantly, you know he or she has probably had a loved one suffering from cancer--this follows true for any disease research.

A common answer I've also heard is "Habitat for Humanity." These are folks who worry about other people having shelter.

Sometimes, when asked this question, people will just stare at you like you're speaking French and they have no idea what you're even asking . . . Don't ever start dating one of those people.

J.C. and I donate *money* to animal shelters and homeless shelters.

We donate *time* to food banks and adult literacy programs.

I'm still contemplating my answer because both animal shelters and food banks are hurting badly for money right now...

I see that the food bank is gaining backers in the late balloting . . .

My answer was informed by what I know of the needs of the Southern Tier area (my in-laws are in Binghamton, I spend quite a lot of time there). People need more help than animals in that area right now.

I feel bad for both abandoned humand and abandoned animals, but here, at least, the humans have a lot of assistance and the animals get short shrift. After all, they are *only* animals. *ggrrrrrr*
