Meanwhile, I am awaiting the delivery of my New! Shiny! Computer! Well, the computing part of it, anyway, as monitor and keyboard will not be replaced. But faster processor! More memory! Working CD drive! Not Vista!

I was perfectly willing to give Vista a try, if I had to. But am just as glad to avoid it for a while longer.... XP has been a very good workbeast, for me.

Ah hell, I'm going to have to come up with a new name for the desktop now... (this one was Poolboy, 'cause he was pretty but slow)

Oh, seriously disturbing. My sister has three or four tattoos, nice basic stuff like flowers and lizards and a Tenniel caterpillar. I'm a little weirded out by the idea that she could get a whole 3D garden ... Not sure she would, but I can't help but picture it.

Though my mother might not mind that one so much ...

And I paid extra on my last new computer to get XP instead of Windows. The kid's new laptop has Vista. I turned off a couple of the fancy eye candy, so it's faster than it was. Possible even to play games on it. Bet if I turned off more it'd move better.

HP refurb P4. Nobody's going to be gaming on it, but it has the speed and memory to run all the things I need -- and no more whrrr whrrr noises!

Now I just need a new printer, and I'll be able to get through 2009 without (knocks wood) disaster

Avoid Vista if at all possible. Microsoft seems to take it for granted that vast new RAM capacities of computers are theirs to use up with a new, gimmicky operating system that for most functions doesn't work one tiny bit better than previous ones.
