- Happy family news: eldest nephew got his first acceptance to one of his top-pick schools: University of Pittsburgh! And now all breathe again, and don't panic at the sound of the mail drop quite so much....

- An interesting and possibly useful article about the psychology of saving (or not) in These Perilous Times. How many of those traits do you recognize?

- The California Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to review legal challenges to Prop. 8, the voter initiative that restored a ban on same-sex marriage, but refused to permit gay weddings to resume pending a ruling in March. And so now we wait. Meanwhile, after a settlement in NJ, EHarmony's going to start 'allowing' same-sex matches via their website. California, the East Cast is trumping you in civil rights. That's gotta sting....

- Meanwhile, Al Qaeda resurfaced with a message for Pres-elect Obama, among other taunts calling him a "house Negro." Duuuudes. I bet he heard worse from racist asshats by the time he was 10. And I understand you're pissed that he was raised a Christian instead of a Muslim like his (absent) dad, but saying he's the "direct opposite of honorable black Americans" like Malcolm X? *snort* You need better insults. Really. 'Cause you didn't even make him blink. Hell, you didn't even make his daughters blink.

Coffee done. Off to work I go...

Hey, great. If he (or you) need any advice on Pitt or Pittsburgh, just yell.

When I heard that last one, I told my husband, "Huh, he's about to be in one of the most important houses in the world. They might want to watch their language."

On the psychology of saving: It's all in how you look at things. In any case, most of the people mentioned in the article make enough disposable income to "waste" some. If they were poor, they would have learned to, for example, put the artichokes hearts back and make due with the cauliflower.

this new one will not hunt

That phrase is mostly used in the sense of "that there don't work." I'm betting the new president will work, but rather the idea that he can be riled is the dog that won't hunt.

And I will say again something I've said many times before. I truly believe that, had we had a stronger president in 2001, the attacks on 9/11 never would have been attempted, let alone succeeded.

Nobody except for the banking execs making off with the bailout money as "bonuses". :P

I have a friend who is addicted to the sales at CVS. She has a house full of toiletries she will never, ever use, and even buys glucose monitors even though she doesn't even know anyone who is diabetic ... just to get those precious "ECBs". And she and her husband are both freelancers dealing with a baby daughter they just found out is permanently disabled. The mind, it boggles.

When I was deciding on a college, I vastly preferred Pittsburgh to Cleveland (the other school that accepted me was Case Western).

"rational decisions are those you make and don’t regret later" -- oh, I do believe, I do, I do.

Al Qaeda's slipping. They're implying that now they believe there's such a thing as an honorable American.

It shows just how stupid Al Qa'ida is. And how desperate. They really needed McCain to win so they could keep up the recruiting. Now that we have a president who actually gets it and is liked by most of the world, well the flow of recruits is going to drop precipitously. Plus Al Qa'ida is taking heat in the Muslim world for killing so many of the Faithful.

I saw the tape of the broadcast and read the transcript. The word Zawahiri used wasn't Negro. AQ just pissed off lots and lots of black African Muslims. AQ is a very racist organization. If you're not white, especially if you're not Arab, your job is to shut up, take orders, and die for the greater glory of Allah.

And to top it all off, AQ in Pakistan has declared war on iran by kidnapping an Iranian diplomat. They're pissed because Iran, according to them, has been undercutting the Taliban in Afghanistan. Iran gave us very valuable help in 2001 against the Taliban, and the Bush administration was too stupid and too bent on revenge to take the opportunity to talk.

(looks up to the heavens and thanks God for making his enemies terminally stupid...)

I took the old dog as being Bush, and therefore the new one was Obama.
