People are giving me too many ire-worthy links.

What are the Issues Obama and McCain should be addressing? [livejournal.com profile] rosenhaus laid it all out for you, better than I could have.
-------
This is not political: this is disgraceful. If you haven't read this, you're, um, missing out on the way the country's being run. Into the ground.

Seriously.

WASHINGTON — As Congress prepares to debate expansion of drilling in taxpayer-owned coastal waters, the Interior Department agency that collects oil and gas royalties has been caught up in a wide-ranging ethics scandal — including allegations of financial self-dealing, accepting gifts from energy companies, cocaine use and sexual misconduct

"Drill, baby, drill" indeed.
----------
And then there's this. The source may be screamingly liberal but the meat of the matter should offend everyone no matter what their political stripe.

"The McCain campaign's surrogates have sucked up a lot of air time this past week shouting "Palin is a victim of sexism!" every time her credentials for the second highest office in the land are questioned. Yet so far they've managed to avoid hard questioning about Palin's role as mayor of Wasilla in overseeing policy that charged REAL victims, rape victims, for the expensive medical and forensic test necessary for prosecuting rapists.

A policy, mind you, that may have been illegal as well as heartless."

This is the woman they claimed would appeal to supporters of Hillary Clinton?

I spent the evening in a bar with an old friend and some new ones. NYers in a bar on 9/11. You think Republican ears were burning? Like farkin' napalm, baby...

On an entirely unrelated note, I've finally gotten a chance to start reading Free Fall, and want to let you know that the first paragraph of chapter seven is now among my all-time favorite chapter beginnings; and "at least nicotine addiction denied would be a valid excuse for being so damned cranky" one of the strongest tone-setting phrases I've read in a very long time.

There's worse.

In 2000, the state of Alaska passed a law forbidding local municipalities from charging rape victims for the rape kits used to examine them. Only one town in the state was doing that at the time (to save taxpayer $$) and yeah, it was Wasilla. While Palin was mayor.

So, yeah. (http://news.bostonherald.com/news/2008/view.bg?articleid=1118416&srvc=2008campaign&position=9) I was going to hold off on talking about this until tomorrow, but hey, it is tomorrow where you are.

Hope this isn't the first thing you read tomorrow morning.

You know what your comment reminds me of?

Years ago I was watching a special about Catholics in America--maybe it was specifically about Irish Catholics.

Anyway, they talked about Al Smith and the hopes/difficulties they had assimilating and even eventually getting into the White House, which poor old Al couldn't do.

Of course, JFK *was* the first Catholic to sit in the oval office, and one of the commentators on the show said (paraphrased by me): We tried to get one of our own into the highest office in the country instead off all the WASPs who'd been there before, and the first one was practically a WASP himself!

I think the implication in Palin's case is pretty straight-forward (and it sucks).
