I deal with overpowering emotions by dumping them onto paper. It gets a majority of the energy out of my mind. Occasionally the result is brilliant poetry or fiction. More often it's something I can mine for later inspiration rather than use directly. Once in a while it's so obviously dangerous that it goes straight into the burn-barrel.

When I need to write a heavy scene, I call up memories from my own experience that match the target emotion, and use those to flavor the writing. It works.
