lagilman: coffee or die (citron presse)

Hi, it's HOT here! I may have overdone it slightly the past few days, on a number of fronts. But a very good time was had. Yay for ocean breezes and SPF 9000! Today, other than a foray out to meet someone for drinks once it cools down a bit, I am staying in my dark, almost-cool office, and working. If I am a very good meerkat, my desk will be cleared and ready for New Stuff on Monday. *cackles with antici...pation*

For Whit, and local foodies:
Wildwood BBQ. Outside of NYC it might not rate in the top 5, but it's pretty damn good nonetheless -- the meat was tender and not greasy, the rubs and sauces were tasty and not overused, and the service was exactly what you'd expect -- friendly, reasonably fast, and no-frills. Plus, they had lamb ribs! And a very nice bar with an excellent selection of bourbon and scotch -- this was an anti-frou frou bar, bless it. We didn't taste all the sides, but the vinegar chips and baked beans with burnt bits were excellent, the cornbread less so (too sweet). Oh, and the jalepeno buttons were a little greasy, but good, especially with the dressing.

Also, this morning we find that the coffee maker may have finally given up the ghost, after chugging along for many years. No son, 'twas deadlines kilt the beast. Anyone have any suggestions for a reliable, no-frills, 8-cup coffee maker with a small footprint? (nobody say a pot and a strainer -- I've had cowboy coffee, yes.)

EtA: Also, if anyone wants a cat? We had a shed-dump here this weekend, leaving enough fur to make either two kittens or one decent-sized adult cat... or, if you're crafty and thinking ahead, a very warm orange-and-black sweater for Halloween....

Strange as it sounds, get the free coffee maker from Gevalia... Then cancel...

We are not big coffee drinkers, but if its the same Krups they gave out several years ago, this thing has been through about 8 different types of moves, extended times of storage and still makes a good cup of coffee...

I was watching a Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives ep the other day where they were featuring BBQ (there's a place in Chicago I must try), but they talked about a place in your neck of the woods, a car body shop in the Bronx where the owner's also set up shot doing BBQ in the parking lot.

It actually looked good. Scary, but good.

The Gevalia suggestion is a pretty good one.

Or, everyone in my family has this one: http://www.cuisinart.com/catalog/product.php?product_id=10&item_id=25&cat_id=3 and L and I ended up getting rid of our GE corner unit to buy one also. It has a small pot setting, tells you when it needs cleaning, is programmable, and has carafe temperature setting (I recommend low unless you need to boil off the coating of your coffee mug). My sister has had hers for a couple of years now and it's still going strong. We've been very happy with ours for about six months now.

I've always been hell on coffee makers -- most of the ones I've had haven't lasted a full year...

The exception: my individual cup Keurig machine -- it's a dream and is still functioning (knock on wood) after a year of fairly substantial use.

coffee and conventions

Ok, for coffee, ever try Cuban coffee? My husband is 100% Cuban and for real stay-awake power, I have a shot of his famous Cuban coffee made with an Espresso machine. Yum.

Or, for this time of year (or any time of year here, I live in Florida and it's always hot) my preference is Thai iced coffee. Amazing stuff.

Now, on to conventions. I was very disappointed to read in an earlier thread that you are not attending Denvention. I saw your name on a list somewhere and was under the impression that you were going. I had really hoped to meet you in person and maybe get one of your books signed. Sigh. Get down to Florida much?
