Making the Way Uptown Genre Mafia 3-for-3, I have joined kradical and terri_osborne in becoming the proud owner of an Asus EEE PC.

Mine is mint green and white, and named 'Toke.'

(EtA: is amused no one has commented on the name)

Tis wee but mighty.... (and fits on even the smallest of table spaces, and gets many curious and admiring glances. And yes, for those wondering, you can open and use it even when the shmuck in the row ahead of you decides to recline his seat....)

Is it a 2G or a 4G? Surf? :D

(Just wondering if the colors are becoming available in anything beyond the 2G Surf yet. I covet an Asus EEE muchly. ;) )

2G. I looked at the 4G (and the 8G) but decided that for what I needed this for, 2G was fine. And no, the 4G is still just black and white...

I heard about it on one of my tech podcasts, but I haven't seen any pictures.

How does using the keyboard feel?

the keyboard is small but fine -- clicky, which I enjoy. The screen is what's taking some getting used to -- the larger version (9") comes out later this month, at a higher price point -- but for traveling and note-taking, this is fine.

I wouldn't want to try to write a full novel on this alone,though.

(I really wish the green had been a little less...neon. But this way I figure nobody's going to pick it up 'accidentally' thinking it was theirs....)

Ooh, I have gadget envy! I've been looking at one lustfully, but can't quite justify it at this point.

Yeah, same here, until I realized that it's the perfect size for taking with me when I'm out and about for the day, or traveling places I really don't want/need a full-purposed laptop. For note-taking, drafting, and e-mail, though, it's perfect.

(if you can manage the keyboard anyway. I'm finding it an easy adaption, but someone with larger hands, or more accustomed to touch-typing might find it a pain.)

With the larger-size unit coming out this month, there may be sales on this one, although I suspect they won't drop the price by much --they're selling well enough, based on what I saw and heard at the store today.

I'll have it with me at Balticon, if anyone wants to 'visit' with it.

On one hand, this looks hugely tempting for portability. However, the EEE Web site is remarkably vague about the would-be Roving Writer's key question: what word processor does it use, and does said werp play nicely with Word?

The eeePC comes with Open Office, which handily saves to .doc and .rtf. I write with Open Office on my desktop, and haven't had any conversion problems.

I adore the Leewit (one's own eeePC 4G). It weighs less than the book I'm reading now.

I ported in a file from MS Word and it opened fine and clean for OpenOffice. I haven't tried saving it in that and returning it, though.

I bought the 4g EEE a while back and have no trouble transporting MS docs back and forth. Only problem I had was when I wanted to download something from from Amazon and it didn't do Linux based systems.

But even though mine is black it is CUTE. Cute in spades. And it weighs 2 lbs and practically fits in my purse.

Black is the most wonderful color ever invented. ;-)

I was very tempted by the black one, as it looks far more sleek and grown-up. Then I thought "nobody will willingly walk away with a semi-neon mint green mini-comp, and if they do I'll spot them easily." And so Toke was acquired.

I have now transferred files back and forth with nary a problem.

Toke fits into my pocketbook, with room for my wallet, keys, glasses and whatnot. Admittedly my pocketbook is not exactly a clutch, but this fact still fills me with glee.
